It's not moderation, it's trying to help someone when they need it most
Because a child can certainly do a better job convincing someone not to commit suicide than a team of adult moderators?

I remember saying no-support earlier down the line. Semi-support. It's life or death.

And actually reading my post is also better than not doing it at all.

Personally, I'd be happier if a peer helped me rather than an adult.

Great, they recommend reporting them. They have a specific alert message for it. Are you sure you're replying to the right guy? Your reply is hardly much of a reply at all.

Look:
Reports take time. The ST can't get to them all right away. Allowing the community to help each other out (by redirecting to an even more qualified group, the suicide prevention hotline) is better than the ST not getting there in time. And who knows if the ST's alert message is good enough? Surely the suicide prevention hotline will do a good job. My point still stands.

Reading this reply chain disgusts me.

Some people only have friends they can talk to on Scratch. Some people are not on good terms with their parents. Talking to parents might make things even worse; they might even be the problem (abuse, etc.).

This number should be uncensored so people can be helped by their friends if necessary. It's not a joke, and your arguments literally make no sense.

I personally have gone through things like this and I thankfully have other medias where I could reach out to friends, but I know many people whose only platform is Scratch. They should be able to vent to their friends.

We should not block help from those who need it.

Online friends are not “strangers you don't even know”.

If the conversation is too much for Scratch, then yes, report it.

But we should be able to say things in a Scratch-friendly manner and ask for help.

Depression is not a joke.

Scratch is not the place to discuss your depression or mental health issues, so no support

I agree, but some people don't have anywhere else. If they keep it kid-friendly, it should be okay.

Edit: I see a lot of people here underestimate children. My sister is 6 and I can guarantee she would be absolutely fine if she saw someone ask for help because they are, to put it nicely, not enjoying life. She would be a bit confused, maybe, but it would not be hard to explain to her that some people go through things like this but it's okay because they can be helped. And the youngest I've seen on Scratch is 8, anyway, so…

Semi-support, why not whitelist Scratch's server number, too, sarcastic

After a lot of thinking, i support. I'm gonna try to address some of the major concerns one by one

I agree, but in the cases that it does come up, we can't just let it be. Also, this suggestion is suggesting an improvement in responses, and probably won't trigger an increase of suicidal discussions on scratch.

While i agree that putting all the responsibility on the child may not be the best idea, especially if they think they can handle it but they can't, this suggestion may improve how good the responses are, rather than making the person feel more depressed, it may actually prompt users to make a better response, redirecting them to the suicide hotline.

I do also think the ST should continue encouraging reporting, but if it's taking too long, this may be a good second resort after reporting.

Would it even be legal? The suicide hotline in my country can summon the police to your location if they feel you are unable to keep yourself safe, which could create some issues for Scratch (though I'm not a lawyer). Adding onto that, some countries don't even have a variant of the hotline in their respective countries.

I think it's perfectly legal, the scratch team already gives an alert containing the link.
