Privatizing Project & Follower Stats • Making Scratch Less About Fame

Would there be any benefit?

This would remove a major aspect that leads to issues regarding popularity. No one would know what “popular” is, and I feel we would soon stop to care. I strongly believe that this would overall make the Scratch Community be a lot more positive, and would create a better focus on Scratch's purpose.

1. Suggest in the forums to bring it back
Then the ST closes the topic, as it's rejected.

ioton wrote:

2. Make petition projects to bring it back
Scratch petitions are, with all honesty, useless.

ioton wrote:

3. Make petition studios to bring it back
Same as #2.

ioton wrote:

4. Change their profiles to bring it back
Same as #2.

ioton wrote:

5. Spam ST members to bring it back
Spamming is against the Community Guidelines, so they'll just get an Alert.

All this happened when the ST switched to 3.0 as well, and, with the catblocks too, it soon died down and people just dealt with it.

i really support it, should only be a merit, we deserve it by making good content, the followers are not used for anything else but to feel proud of what we have done so far, I also hope that people will stop seeing the “popular” scratchers like special people, they have nothing better or different from the others, the number of followers will never say how good they are or not, just that removing the statics of a user and projects could be a confusion, we don't understand if the person or the project was liked or not, I think it should be ok, but just that people shouldn't take it seriously and make it a war

I wouldn't say that- The “Diet Coke” version was scrapped since people didn't like it, and it was just one of the few times the ST caved in.
What makes you think the real version will fare any better?

Wouldn't it be better to remove them entirely in order to avoid the whole “lying about my stats” affair? Favourites would become private bookmarks and there will be no count on the page.

Semi-support. People want to see who is following who, and how popular a project is. If this suggestion was implemented, there would be a major uproar and loads of protests. However, it would be good to make scratch less about fame.

No, as in a lot of people saying stuff like “BRING THE STATS BACK” once or twice.

Well this is a suggestion, so I'm not saying "oh this will be a feature", sooooo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But, for one, the Diet-Coke-View-Count was basically a planned “feature”, whereas if this was implemented, it would be implemented. Two, the Fame-Game wasn't really an issue back when the Diet-Coke-View-Count was planned.

I don't think this would necessarily be an “issue”. Of course, one could say that they have 9999999 followers, and all of their projects have 800000+ views and 600000+ loves and faves, though that wouldn't seem too realistic. Plus, who cares? If someone has 5 followers, or if they have 2,000, it's not about the number.

I don't think them saying it “once or twice” is really going to be an issue-

Can someone explain to me what the Diet Coke View Count was?

It was a planned “feature” back before 3.0's release where the project view count would say 100+ when views were over 100.

Was it though? IMO a lot of the symptoms of a community primarily focused on getting famous were already well underway by the beginning of 2019. I know F4F was an issue 5 years ago and studios like Add Everything studios could be considered a way to advertise and those have been around for years as well. I'd say this is an issue the community's had for a while, it's just that being anti-fame has pretty much become trendy over the last few weeks.

Yeah, from what I know there have always been Scratchers who were obsessed with fame. This is not a new issue. Lots of times it comes in “waves,” as well — exacerbated by the ever-growing Scratch community.

As for the original suggestion, I think sending users alerts for sharing their project stats is a bit of an overreaction, though — not to mention that it would cause significantly more work for us. But more than anything, I would think that people should feel proud of their achievements.

Sure, there are lots of people that are very vocal about getting 1000 loves on a project. But on the flip-side, I am confident that there are also a lot of Scratchers who are excited to tell their good Scratch friends that their project finally got 10 loves. Not in a bragging way, but in a happy way. I'd absolutely hate to make someone feel bad about their achievements that they got in an honest way.

Right, you mention that “Thanks for XXX followers” projects are okay, so it must depend on context. If someone says “I have 100 loves on my project,” should that be removed? Are they happily telling their best Scratch friend this wonderful achievement, or are they putting someone down for not having nearly as many loves? Evidently context is important — but again, it creates more work, especially when the exact line to cross doesn't seem all that clear.

Diet Coke doesn't taste as good.

Actually, I support. Scratch was made to be a programming website- not a social media website all about fame.

I must say I agree with all of that.

I definitely haven't thought this Suggestion though in terms of that- I'll be thinking about this, and I'll work to improve it later.
Thanks for your response!

Yes, as Za-Chary said, there needs to be a clear line between right and wrong what is and isn't allowed, otherwise the ST could face a lot of anger because the user thought that doing something was allowed and the moderator didn't.
