There were racing games competing against SEGA racing games long before MarioKart.
Such as F-Zero and racing games made by NAMCO, KONAMI, and Hudson.

I looked it up and only 3 episodes were ever aired, based on 9 manga volumes, so pretty short-lived. Interesting that someone would reimagine such a thing as manga though - and I say that having seen manga versions of linear algebra and Marxian political economy.

For instance this video explains how that SEGA logo animation was done under the constraints of the console, and this one is about the opening cinematic of Sonic 3D Blast. Definitely a channel worth checking out if you're into programming, and the technical aspects of SEGA consoles.
