Eh…this topic just seems to be generating a lot of hostile feelings. It also seems to be getting way off-topic. I think it's become unproductive so I'm closing it.

Freedom of speech, remember?
There's limits to how far you can go with freedom. I stay within that boundary.
Hah. Freedom is limits. Doublethink strikes again. >.>

Orwell reference? High five!

P.S. is this actually closed? It doesn't appear to be…
If so: my final word.
1. We have freedom of speech. It can not be revoked, only given up (in the case of classified information)
2. People are often mean and/or stupid. Stupid people have the same right to free speech as you do, they just say stupid things
3. It is not the government's job to control what we say or think. That's something out of 1984. The government's job is to keep Americans safe. This person was not a true threat, and should not be imprisoned as we are supposed to have free speech.

I just feel very strongly about this sort of thing, okay? Whenever I feel strongly about a certain subject I kind of turn into a jerk.

It's just infuriating to me, how cruel of a punishment this kid is getting even though he seriously does not deserve it. I mean, sure, it wasn't a very nice thing to say, but it really does not call for an eight year prison sentence. You can all hate me for being angsty and mean but I was just kind of letting out what I felt about this matter.

scratch is a private entity; therefore freedom of speech does not apply

Er… I said that to counter what you said, that freedom has boundaries. This post contradicts your previous one…
I agree to disagree with myself. Freedom without limits is chaos. Freedom with limits is not freedom at all.

…What is freedom?
it's a freedom of speech
not a freedom to murder everyone

In the end, the boy physically did nothing. He had no gun and had no plot to kill innocent people. Therefore, there is not really any reason for him to go to jail. He can be fined or punished in another way, though, because he caught the interest of the authorities. 8 years of jail time would ruin his life, and that is not fair, especially because he has freedom of speech, and there is no way he could have predicted that a seemingly paranoid woman would research his identity and track him down because of a sarcastic (though distasteful) comment.

I really don't want to be a part of this and have everyone hate me, but whatever.

First, I think everyone should stop hating people because of their opinions.
ProdigyZeta has his own opinion, and to the people that disagree, its no reason to say:

Also, I feel that the League of Legends kid should definitely get punished, but honestly, years of jail is a bit of an overreaction.

Finally, “freedom of speech” is limited, as you can't be like:

In an airplane: “I have a bomb and I'll blow all of you up HAHAH” *10 minutes late* “I was just kidding.”

In a movie theater: “OMG there is a fire” *Everyone runs out* “Hahah I was kidding”

Calling 911: “Someone is killing me!” *Police urgently drive over to the address* “JK HAHAH”

So… That's what I feel…

(EDIT: Organized this post)

(EDIT: Another thing is, you can go to jail for wasting police time. Think about how it would be wasting the government's time)

I definitely see your point here.

Still though, if they did find no guns or weapons in his possession, why should he continue to remain in jail? He may have made a stupid comment but there wasn't any real intention to carry it out, nor was there any accessible way.

The top two are in private establishments which can make laws restricting languages. The third is indeed wasting police time, which is not allowed. In those, it depends on where you're saying them: not what you're saying.

A teen playing League of Legends has been arrested for a comment he made online. One player called him insane, and he replied with:

Oh yeah, I’m real messed up in the head, I’m going to go shoot up a school full of kids and eat their still, beating hearts,

His next to lines were lol and jk. A canadian woman who read his message thought he was serious and tracked him down. A month later he was arrested.

Discuss.

I think I get what the hype was.

even though the guy said “LOLJK” that was a really horrible message. He could have said “I'm real messed up in the head” instead. I mean, think about it. Shooting kids isn't funny. Eating hearts isn't funny. I like sarcasm, but this kid took it too far.

Think of that happening, if you saw it happen.

It's even worse than covering yourself in jell-o, yodeling inside the empire state building as you ride the elevator, breaking the top of the building, jumping off and surviving because of the jell-o (red jell-o, though) and jumping off again…. and again… and again…. and then, once you're slightly beaten up and still have jell-o all over you, buying a ring and proposing to your toy dinosaurs.

then you eat a cat.

EVEN WORSE THAN THAT.
