Write the countries in their actual name

Right now when you go to a profile it gives any location of Scratcher in it's English term (a.k.a United States, Germany, etc). How about instead of that you write it in the name the inhabitants actually call it? (Germany = Deutschland for example).

Different idea: Write the country names in the user selected language.

I think this should be determined by language.

I think a better idea would be to show the names of the countries in the language you have selected. Otherwise it would get too confusing, especially for countries where their most common language isn't written Latin script. I think most English speakers would have no idea what country 中国 or ประเทศไทย is (China and Thailand for those wondering).

This also raises the issue of where there are multiple common languages in a country, which one do you pick? For example, South Africa has 12 official languages, of which three are spoken as a first language by at least 10% of the population.

i dont want to pull up a translator every time i see some country name that i dont know
some are easier to recognize (like my country for example - Việt Nam is literally Vietnam without the accent and the space) but some will get people confused like jvvg said

but if we’re gonna translate it according to the language you’re using (e.g. if you set it to Vietnamese it’ll show the US as Mỹ/Mĩ/Hoa Kỳ (im sorry there are 3 different ways), Germany as Đức, France as Pháp and so on) then i see no problem

In my opinion this respects foreign countries better.

Why not do it by language instead (as @ThisIsTemp1 suggested, earlier in the topic)?

That way, there isn't any confusion at all. It just makes sense regardless of which language(s) you speak.

I respect that Idea but that would be a totally other suggestion.

This could be a good idea, but it should be based on language. Also, Scratch needs to change Swaziland

No support. I think they should call countries what they're called in the language selected, just like every single maps app. This really wouldn't make sense, especially for a website targeted at children who may still be learning or not know the names of countries in their primary language.

But this will teach them?? I'm not getting this.

It would be the same suggestion, just a different way of showing it.

Reason?

It would most likely teach kids how the people of the country say they're own country, also it would make more sense of the people in the country.

How? Explain.

Maybe it's location based then?

I agree with this.

All and all this is a good suggestion, but it needs to only show based on your language.

Plus, most people live in America (https://scratch-mit-edu.ezproxyberklee.flo.org/statistics/) so this wouldn't affect much, but however still affect people outside of the US.

This post does not determine based on language. That could be a change.
Here they are saying to change it no matter what.

It would be really difficult to identify the country this way

still you’re acting as if non-americans don’t take up a large portion
