Keeping Up With The SWCers - Interviews
Well I'd like to start of by thanking you all for welcoming me to this community when I decided to join back in November 2022. I've come a long way since then, but I can't even begin to imagine what my life would be like without SWC. It's what keeps me going everday and I absolutely love all the amazing friendships I've been able to make over the years! So yes, I'm incredibly excited to be giving an interview today to share my SWC experience and hopefully inspire some others along the way <3

Keeping Up With The SWCers - Interviews
We're just as excited to have you here! I imagine a lot of our SWC journey's would not have been the same without you, so thank you for that!
Moving on to the questions, we've prepared 16 of them, most given by our team but a few given by the community!
We'll be giving you 4 questions at a time, and if you're comfortable with it, we'll also ask a few follow up questions. Feel free to deny any question you're not comfortable with answering, and now, without further ado here are your first four questions!
How'd you find SWC?
What's been your favourite cabin you've lead?
What is one of your Favourite SWC memories?
How many sessions have you been in?

Keeping Up With The SWCers - Interviews
Yes, that sounds great to me!
1. How'd you find SWC
I think I was going through the front page after just joining Scratch and honestly just looking through the site. One of the projects under the front page curators tab was made by an SWC-er. Intrigued to see their other projects, I went to their profile and saw a lot of SWC-related things. From cabin projects, to a whole studio - this was all so new to me and that's when I began actually looking into SWC. I found myself in the Main Cabin soon thereafter, and from there I went to camper signups!
I believe it was around Nov 6th so I decided to signup as a backup and give it a try. I didn't really know many people who were apart of the community, but it looked so fun from afar, and I wanted to see how it'd feel! I honestly don't regret a thing – Naan-Fi was the best way for me to start my SWC journey and I'm so lucky to have made so many friendships in that cabin <3 I feel like Birdi, Daisy, and Sophie inspired me to apply for leader the following session because the whole cabin was just so magical, and I wanted to give others the same experience I had ;D
2. What's been your favourite cabin you've lead?
Ahh this is honestly so hard because I tend to pre-plan cabins so each one is like bringing one of those ideas to life and there's really no way to describe the feeling of seeing what you've dreamed of as a physical thing <33 Right now it's kind of a tie between Trapped in a Fairytale (March ‘24) and The Boba Tavern (Nov ’24), with Bi-Fi Minion Mania being a close second. I worked with absolutely amazing people during both of these sessions (as well as all my other ones!) and there was just something almost iconic about these cabins that make me feel so happy.
Fairytales was honestly an experience like no other- it was actually supposed to be the theme of my SWC Leader App the session I got to lead Myth so yeah, the idea was definitely in my head for a while XD One thing different about Fairytales as opposed to a lot of my other cabins was that this was the first “storyline intensive” cabin I was leading. I had doubts of even putting it down as a preference because I didn't want it to fall short of everything that I had imagined it to be. From the Archetypes, to the goats, to all the different realms, I loved planning this cabin with Amethyst and Sienna and it will always have a place in my heart <3
Coming to The Boba Tavern this past session; although I was not as active this time around, the theme was really whimsical and I loved designing the aesthetic with Clev and CJ! Above all, the boba pals were so cute ahhh and I feel like I loved the cabin environment and all my campers so much. Cabin wars was absolutely crazy when we finished about 16 wars during the second one XD In general, I feel like we were also so close and bonded in more ways then one, and for those reasons, I absolutely loved this cabin!
3. What is one of your Favourite SWC memories?
Again- how do I even begin to choose ahhh. You guys are making this really hard. I think I'll narrow it down to two - one of them being during Fairytales cabin planning and another being the second cabin wars when I was in Bi-Fi. Starting with Fairytales, I remember that I was busy with exams and Sienna and Amethyst were designing some things on the Canva. I told them that I'd be on and off between tabs - they had a lot of fun and goofed off (honestly our late night Canva designing was iconic, which is why we ended up creating that memory book ;D) and then they started talking about lore stuff! They wanted my thoughts and in order to summon me, they created this summoning thumbnail board thing which I still laugh at since Amethyst occasionally uses it when we're doing Polar Bear planning and stuff <3 Honestly the whole planning of the cabin was such a vibe and logging on each day to plot what was to happen next was so fun and memorable!
Onto Bi-Fi cabin wars! I typically love warring a lot of cabins during cabin wars, which is why I was so disappointed when I initially thought that we were leaving for a trip on the day of cabin wars. We were actually leaving the day after, which was just perfect! In the midst of packing I would take a break to write words towards my cabin total and then I'd also just use that time to send wars when shields were down! I think I ended sending about 25 wars during those cabin wars and I honestly just loved all the chaos <3 Definitely something I'd love to do again ;D
4. How many sessions have you been in?
I've participated in a total of 7 sessions! This coming one in March 2025 will be my 8th – these are the cabins I've been in in the past: Naan-Fi Breadhouse (Nov ‘22), Non-Fi Fossil Dig (March ’23), Myth: War Between Two (July ‘23), Script Misfits (Nov ’23), Trapped in a Fairytale (March ‘24), Bi-Fi Minion Mania (July ’24), and Magical Realism: The Boba Tavern (Nov '24).

Wow! It sounds like you've had alot of fun as a SWCer!!
We don't have any follow up questions for that set, so we'll move onto the next ones <3
These are centred more around being a Host than simply an SWCer -
With so many amazing applications, what's your process like for deciding who will be leading SWC for the next session?
What advice do you have for anyone who wants to go for leader, but isn't sure?
What is the camper sorting process like?
What, in particular, about the results makes them so hard to get out?

Hi Livy! I apologize for not replying sooner (exam season ahh <3), but is it ok if I respond back tomorrow?
I'll probably have more time since I rescheduled one of my extracurriculars. I'll do my best to catch up!
Thank you, and sorry once again <3

Keeping Up With The SWCers - Interviews
Hi, I'm extremely sorry for the long wait ^^ Thank you so much for your patience <33
Round 2
With so many amazing applications, what's your process like for deciding who will be leading SWC for the next session?
I personally really like taking the time to interact with apps and seeing the theme because although it does not heavily influence our decisions (since answers are definitely the most important part), I find that I can learn a lot from about individual just by going through their app. It definitely shows you their interests, skills, and dedication, and I honestly love how creative everyone tends to get when it comes to their app theme. In terms of choosing who will be leading a cabin in SWC - that's definitely hard. We get so many good applications and it can honestly take ages to narrow down from such a talented group!
I think recently we've found a way to make the whole process a lot more easier and straightforward. I'm not entirely sure as to what the process was like in the past, but right now each host makes a mock list of ~13 people they believe should be considered. We then sort through these lists and identify who was on all of them, what needs to be discussed, etc. This time we were actually quite quick when it came to our decisions. I know the mocklist creation process is definitely tedious since the apps are so high quality, but creating them and then advocating for/discussing potential candidates is really efficient and I feel like it's a great structure to have. It's also much easier than talking about every single app if we each have a clear idea as to the team we're envisioning for the session.
What advice do you have for anyone who wants to go for leader, but isn't sure?
I would definitely tell them to go for it! I'm going to be really honest when I say that I wasn't active when I first joined SWC in November 2022. I was a backup camper in the iconic Naan-Fi breadhouse but I was still working out what SWC actually was, and I was not as involved as I could have been that session. However, my leaders, Daisy, Birdi, and Sophie, inspired me to apply the following session. I was a bit wary since I didn't have much experience to go off of, but looking right now, I don't regret a thing!
My honest advice is to shoot your shot! You're never going to know unless you try and there's no harm in trying. Regardless of if you end up getting to be apart of the leadership team or not, everything is a learning opportunity at the end of the day, and you won't regret a thing. If it's not now, then there's always next time. You just need to keep reaching for your dreams while always remembering to never give up <3
What is the camper sorting process like?
So I can't really speak too much about the sorting process since Robin is our sorting icon ;D She takes care of all the sorting and I'm sure she has her own algorithms to get things done (so you'd probably have to ask her). However, as a quail, I can tell you that we input all of the camper signups into a spreadsheet which is where the sort begins once signups are closed. It's definitely a hard task and I would definitely like to learn more about the camper sorting process in future sessions <3
What, in particular, about the results makes them so hard to get out?
Results come from a combination of things - but most importantly, it's all about the writing competition! I think we're definitely finding a way to streamline the process for future sessions since it is taking quite some time to get them shared. Coming to the writing comp, SWC is filled with numerous talented writers. I have immense respect to the judges for going through all of the entries and shortlisting their favorites because that is in no way an easy task. Reading through all these entries, then proceeding to debate certain aspects is definitely a time consuming process. In the past we've also had panelists take a look at entries and come up with their suggested rankings, which is really supposed to help limit any biases, if any. Honestly, there are so many wonderful things happening behind the scenes of SWC, and I'm constantly in awe of the wonders people are able to create. Although I've never been a judge, I know that it's no easy task so it's important to be patient while we're waiting – after all, life > SWC and things will happen from time to time.

I think I should be able to complete them on time! I've just been so busy with exams ahh :0
I have my last one tomorrow, so after that I should be free!
I'll finish answering all of them either tomorrow afternoon or in the morning on Wednesday <3
Would that give you guys enough time to compile things?

Round 3
What's your favourite book?
I think you're going to start to realize that I'm a very indecisive person ahaha- I'm currently looking at my bookshelf as I'm writing this, and I have absolutely no idea what to choose. I actually haven't really been reading as much lately, so I'm definitely trying to get back into the habit of reading before bed. However, if I were to choose my three all time favorites, I think I would go with A Wish In the Dark, I Fell In Love With Hope, and The War I Finally Won.
What’s your favourite beverage?
If the Boba Tavern was any indication, I would have to say that my favorite beverage is bubble tea! I personally love fruit juices, smoothies, milkshakes, and anything of that sort really! But bubble tea honestly has a very special place in my heart. I remember we'd drive about an hour to my dance classes each week and between my classes (since I did both group and solo) we'd go to the mall to eat lunch. A lot of times, we'd also get bubble tea so it kind of became a little tradition. We don't really do that as often anymore, but I still love going to get bubble tea after exams with my friends! So yeah, bubble tea is arguably the best beverage hehe ;D If I were to choose a few flavors it would probably be a passionfruit or mango fruit tea <3
What's your favourite fruit?
I'm honestly such a fruit girlie XD Whether it be lotion, lip products, or soap, I really love fruit-based products. Growing up, I sometimes apparently (according to my mom at least) only ate fruits for meals which is quite interesting XD. That being said, I don't think I could ever just pick a singular fruit, which is why I'll be giving you my top 5 in no particular order: passionfruit, peaches, strawberries, pomegranates, and every SWC-er's favorite… mangoes!
What's your favourite part of SWC?
I think my favorite part of SWC is definitely the community. From day 1, everyone has been so welcoming and helpful, and there's almost this contagious happiness the people in this community are able to spread. I've made so many friends over these past two years and I can't believe how close I am with these people. Although I never imagined myself joining a community like SWC, I can't even begin to think about what my life would be like without it at this point. It's honestly such a safe and caring space, and I've seen myself grow so much over these years. I think having a supportive circle like this is something that everyone should have, and I'm so happy to call SWC my second home - a place I can come to, knowing that people will always be there for me <3

Thank you Alana!! The fruits you choose are delicious! And the books are so good!
The final round is our miscellaneous questions, some fun, bright questions along with others that maybe didn't fit in with any of the other categories! Try to get them done when you can as the interview is coming up either tomorrow or the day after <3
Also, would you mind adding an outro or a little goodbye at the end as well?? It's not necessary but it would finish it off nicely <33

Round 4
What motivates you to write?
I think often times I just get this sudden spark of motivation to write – it typically comes after a change of scenery or a new experience. I like to convey a story through my writing and I find that using my surroundings is a great way to pick up inspiration. In addition to this, if I read any good books/or what somee TV shows that I really like, I tend to do a bit of rough brainstorming to see what I can play with. At the end of the day, when it comes to creative writing, I think it's really that “Aha!” moment that gets me writing <3
How crazy are you?
I mean, isn't everyone just a little bit crazy ;D I think I definitely am a chaotic person, and SWC is chaotic, so it's perfect!
How much arson have you committed?
None to my knowledge- I prefer to eat mascots <3 Speaking of, you should come to my annual session cookout!
There'll be another one in March and I would love for everyone to come ;D
How did you choose your nickname?
I initially wasn't really sure what to keep as my nickname. Obviously, I wasn't going to go and use my own name and I also didn't want to choose a name based off of my username. I started searching up names online for inspiration, and that's when I came across Alana. I've never really met any other Alana's aside from one - an amazing dancer, and a total inspiration for me when it came to dance. Since I also just loved the vibe this name gives off, Alana seemed like the right fit. I honestly really love it and I don't think I would ever consider changing it! It's definitely become apart of me now <3

Goodbye
Thank you so much for having me on KUWTS! It's been a pleasure getting interviewed and I'm so happy to be apart of bringing more transparency to the SWC community. I love the idea that you guys have going here, and I'm so honoured to have been the first interview to officially launch this project! Once again, thank you so much and I hope you were able to learn a bit more about SWC
side note:
Thank you so much for bearing with me ahaha- these past two weeks have been nothing but chaos, and I deeply apologize for not being more proactive about responding here in a timely manner. I absolutely love this idea and can't wait to see where you guys will go next <3

Hello to our next guest!! Welcome to our interview forum! <3
We ask that once your interview is finished you leave the forum alone unless you are asked to come back.
If you are unable to meet the deadline for all your questions please let your interviewer or me know and we'll sort something out (likely pushing the date forward so you have more time <3)
