Currently playing sonic mania (on the metal sonic boss fight now) and honestly, I think it's on of, if not the best sonic games of all time. Literally zero doubt that this is the peak of 2D sonic games. Like 90% of all the things I don't like about the game are just because I'm not super good at it, and there's literally barely anything bad about it. It's literal perfection. I love the little obscure references, they really put a lot of effort and care into the game. The graphics are beautiful (legitimately do not understand how some people say that the graphics are “bad” just because they're pixelated, the graphics are perfection). The pixel art is so excellent in this game that it makes the old genesis graphics hard to look at in comparison (and I love the genesis graphics!) . The gimmicks in each level are genius and bring an incredibly fun twist to old levels. The music is also some of the best video game music I have ever listened to. There is not one song in this game I dislike. Even after replaying the same level over and over again because I'm struggling at a boss fight or something, not once do I become irritated or even annoyed at the music.

Overall, sonic mania is perfection. It is the classic sonic game. It is the video game equivalent of absolute cinema. It deserves the hype. Trying to find a bad thing about it is trying to find a needle in a haystack the size of little planet from sonic cd. If I were to rate it out of 10, I would rate it a 10/10 without hesitation.

imo its WAY easier to play mania when you have played the classic games before. i started playing in like 2020 or smth and was really bad. i made it to the press garden zone act 2 boss then quit. years later after i had completed CD and sonic 2 i started beating more levels.

i've beaten the regular final boss as tails. (only have one chaos emerald) i'm on titanic monarch on encore mode (no have any emeralds here)

Honestly I don’t like how SEGA seems to have a “Classic = 2D & Modern = 3D” mindset. I get it’s some attempt at brand consistency but it’s so limiting, Like give me a 3D game where you can explore Classic Sonic’s world! Bring back games like Advance or Rush where you can play as the modern cast in a 2D setting!

Yea like that seems so great to do! I want a 2d boost game like Rush again!

Then I would throw my controller at the wall

3D Blast already has issues with depth perception and it's camera and turning that into the main appeal of the game is an awful idea
