I have this idea where you get to choose why to close the comments section.
Here is a mockup I made.

I don't mean to be that guy, but what would the report option be for this?

I do think this is a good idea, though, and it looks like this could work.

What I have often seen done is right before closing comments, the profile owner will post a comment explaining their reasoning for doing so. I'm not sure we need a dedicated feature when the workaround is that simple.

It's just an example!!! It could be anything, from how @griffpatch has his games and closes the comments because it crashes the scratch server.

Griffpatch has done this in the past. The comments on Paper Minecraft were closed for that exact reason, and he left a note explaining it, without the use of this feature.

Yeah, but Scratch Team could also add a function that says:
Close all projects' comments?
Choose reason why: a,b,c.
Example: Someone leaves Scratch and decides to close all the comments.
Example 2: going on vacation, and they don't want mail. (Trust me, this happens to some people!)

That makes sense, but I morphed my idea into close all project comments.

that is a good idea maybe you can upload a json to specify which projects you want to close and why.

okay this is obviously an bad idea. but I have to wait until tomorrow to close it.

Seems like a good idea to me, would prevent many people from accidentally closing their comments section. This will also provide current users who visit the project an idea why the comment sections were closed.

Maybe it's not a bad idea, and I could just be arguing about this wrong. I apologize for that.

I would like to see how this would all work, like reporting a specific project or all of their comment sections. That would show why they were closed.

and it just says that comments are turned off by ST (no gossip and naming and shaming)

only the ST and the owner will have the reason why

Just post a comment telling the reason why before closing the comments. Also, you'd need to have a “report reason” button because people could write something inappropriate in the reason box.

But I got a better idea. What if the ST can close it, and they can say, The Scratch Team decided to close this project's comments. Reason: (insert here)

Why not just comment the reason why you are closing the comments, and then close them?

If you can do it using comments already, why waste the time and work for a feature that will probably won't be used much, or at all?

"The Scratch Team has decided to close this comment section because the user is banned, or something like that. But, other than for inappropriate comments or bans, why would the ST close comment sections.

No it's a “choose reason” not a type in. and just report the project.
