This is the story writing thread for Soundwave Productions' Kokoro Beats, a rhythm game in making! If you're interested in joining or just looking at the main stuff, links are below.

Overall Game Elements:
Visual Novel:
Rhythm Game:
Gacha System:
Story:
Miscellaneous Game Mechanics:
World:
- Visual novel styled dialogue
- Rhythm game
- Gacha system (MAYBE)
- NPC relationships (will trigger certain events, art, stories, and songs)
- Save function
- RPG-styled movement
Visual Novel:
- Static images of characters speaking with different expressions
- Active relationship meter at the top with typical VN dialogue settings
- Slightly transparent textbox at the bottom
- Hopefully with voice actors… but this is ancillary…
Rhythm Game:
- Notes flow from the top middle to a large scale towards the bottom (Just like PJSK)
- 2 Game Modes (PC + Mobile)
- -> PC = standard single notes + hold notes
- -> Mobile = standard single notes + hold notes + sliders (MOBILE is currently 2ND priority)
- Dark + light mode? Also not MVP
- Standard options for note speed, volume, etc
Gacha System:
- Not very flushed out, I admit…
- Currency is “Beats” or something like that…
- “Beats” are earned by quests or playing the songs
Story:
- Player controls a character, finally!
- At start of game, player chooses gender and name
- The main place is set in “International Academy of Music” or something like that
- Age-range is standard high school years, because Scratch.
Miscellaneous Game Mechanics:
- The world is set to be sorta like a top-down pixel RPG (Omori, Pixel Dungeon, etc, etc…)
- Player can be customized (Not MVP)
- Profile can be customized (We'll probably make this a multiplayer, I'm not sure yet…)
- In main lobby/home/whatever, player can view relationships, songs, stories/events, and profile…
- NPCs that the player builds enough RP(relationship points) with can join you with special attributes/buffs during rhythm game or lounge in player's main screen…
World:
- Time: Modern 2020s
- Location: Prestigious music academy in London
- - Despite the modern world, the academy has early 1900s infrastructure and feel

So Far:
- VN - Game starts on first school day for MC - start of new school year
- VN - MC is greeted by student guide, a major character
- RPG + VN - SG(student guide) shows MC around and MC meets different groups of kids(art, theatre, chorus, band, etc)
- RPG - MC reaches academy main stage where school has performances
- RPG - The stage is empty so the SG urges MC to go up on stage
- RPG + Rhythm - MC goes to the stage and the tutorial level plays

wait- one question. the idea is that the player gets a character to customise and play as, so the start of the storyline is them starting their education at the academy, right?

Yes, as a transfer student from… America. So they're roughly around 16-17. I guess - wait- one question. the idea is that the player gets a character to customise and play as, so the start of the storyline is them starting their education at the academy, right?

So for the story so fart I was thinking that you walk into the academy So the new student is greeted by a charchter. They character shows them around and they meet the different groups of kids (art, theatre, chorus, band, etc) since this is a music and arts school. Then you reach the academy main stage which is where the school has performances and people practice singing and other things. They see that the stage is empty. The person who is giving them the tour urges them to go up onto the stage. They get up on the stage and the tutorial level/ first time the player will play the actual game itself starts.
this is just an idea but let me know what you think

Okay, so some more stuff for the story maybe could be that after the tutorial level, the player unlocks the song and can go back and play it more later. Now the guide goes up to them all excited and compliments them on how good they sound. They go down to the player's first class where they can pick a new song to play. After they complete the songs and finish the class period the guide from earlier comes back to them. Now since they have befriended the guide, they go to their next class that they have together and they are stopped in the hallway by a bully. The first battle begins and when its over they end up defeating the bully and they go off to the next class.

There is continuation to the storyline, of course. No worries! In the RPG part of the game, the player does progress through school, and then we can have whatever else happen as well. K, so I’m a little confused. The player progresses throughout the school year and “earns” songs? Then, the player gets to play them? Sry I’m really new to this.
Songs are earned through the story, but the player can also buy songs or just earn songs through dev gifts on their own.
