Use Mastodon or similar over X for server status

It is now completely impossible for anyone without an X account (i.e. the majority of the site's user base) to see any post on X on an account's profile page other than the one they have pinned.

For most of Scratch right now, status updates are not accessible. I propose the use of Mastodon or another service federated via ActivityPub to post updates instead, as:
  • They are free and open source, which aligns with Scratch's philosophy
  • They don't have this limitation of not being able to view posts without signing up

AND there's no potential for little ones to see inappropriate content… I think.
Because they host their own istance of Mastodon, is that how it works? It's not centralized so it has no links to potential adult content

Yes, Scratch could do this but defederating (disconnecting your instance from the others) is highly discouraged in the Fediverse.

Still, it's impractical. I've used Nitter many a time but it's ridiculous to have to rely on something like it. The ST doesn't link to Nitter on their status page (which they are unlikely to do) and I don't think it's a good idea to continue supporting X anyways.

What's wrong with supporting X/Twitter?

Because Elon Musk sucks and there's clearly a better alternative which many people are moving to: Mastodon

Support for reasons in the OP

Bluesky or Threads is probably a better option than Mastodon.

I agree X is a complete binfire now.

Edit: it’s amusing I can’t mention the old name of X in a discussion now

If I remember correctly, Bluesky is invite only and Threads you need an account to view at all.
Plus, both are mostly closed source.

Would be open to Cohost. Downside is that it's not ActivityPub compatible

There's really no alternative to X (HATE that I have to call it that now, ew) I also hate Elon, but the site he's made really cannot be replaced

Anyways, no support, “”“X”“” is more widely known and easier to use. Besides, Mastodon became irrelevant 2 weeks after it opened

Easier to use when it's unviewable without an account? I don't think so. That was the main point I made. Most Scratch users cannot legally sign up for an X account, so they are missing out on important status updates.

Mastodon is far from irrelevant. It is still being widely used in the free and open source software community—i.e. who it was made for and exactly what Scratch's whole idea was built upon.

“far from irreverent” id severely beg to differ

Instead of messages/posts, what about uptime pages, like for example Uptime Kuma?

These are self-hostable and don't rely of human beings manually posting the status.

Anyways, support. X is awful.

Support because I want to know more about why part of Scratch is down without having to convince my parents to let me check. Also, the Scratch Team usually doesn't put it out in the front page.
