is its own country. So, would we include Taiwan? If we do, China might block scratch. If we don’t, people might be mad because there isn’t enough diversity or that Taiwan isn’t represented. The Unicode standard already defines which flag emojis are valid – the country needs to have an No support. What would classify as a country? For example, China believes Taiwan isn’t a country, and is a part of China, while others believe that Taiwan ISO 3166-1 country code. This is the same list of countries that Scratch already uses for the location list shown when creating an account.

I think the main problem with this suggestions is that flag emojis are not supported on Windows. This means the Scratch Team would need to either design their own emojis or use an emoji font if they wanted everyone to be able to see the flag.

Hmm. I like the idea but… Serbians might be against the adding of Kosovo. Chinese might be against Taiwan. It sound nice in theory but there would be a lot of controversy involving which flags are included and not. Of course, you could just make it filter the countries that have semi-recognition to not be shown for certain countries but that still can cause disagreements and weird stuff. For example, if I live in China and someone tries to use the Taiwanese flag, what would happen? Would it be blank? I think THAT is the issue with this suggestion.

I just want to note that I do 100% support these countries but others might not. Eventually, even more controversial things will come up with countries and which flags will we inlude? Another issue, do we include Wales' flag and the UK? Gladly.

Simple; if you can set your location to a place on Scratch, and it also has a flag, then it should have a flag emoji. Kosovo, Taiwan, and Palestine all can be selected for your location, but places like Wales cannot. Places like the Heard and McDonald Islands can be selected, but do not have a flag.I just want to note that I do 100% support these countries but others might not. That thought process above makes complete sense except for this section.
What would happen then? Places like the Heard and McDonald Islands can be selected, but do not have a flag.I assume that it would use Australia's flag as Australia's flag is often used to depict it.

The controversy. Countries have strong feelings of what is a country and what isn't. So, by including flags for places that some countries say aren't countries might cause some disagreement between Scratchers. Of course, like SavetheAtlantic suggested, perhaps the flags to be used are the ones on Scratch's location setting. But this then brings up the problem of Heard Island and McDonald Islands because there is no official flag. Would Australia's flag count for them then? What does this have to do with anything…? Hmm. I like the idea but… Serbians might be against the adding of Kosovo. Chinese might be against Taiwan. Edit: And controversy among Scratchers would still be an issue as well.

They simply do not get an emoji; there's no point in having two Australian emojis. It doesn't really matter since nobody lives there. (I was saying just one Aussie flag for Australia and HMDI but okay) True, but Antartica is almost completely uninhabited as well (except for the researchers but they don't use Scratch, now do they?). So would Antartica's flag be used? They simply do not get an emoji; there's no point in having two Australian emojis. It doesn't really matter since nobody lives there. It has its own flag, it can be selected as a location, and it is an actual emoji, so yes.(I was saying just one Aussie flag for Australia and HMDI but okay) True, but Antartica is almost completely uninhabited as well (except for the researchers but they don't use Scratch, now do they?). Look, I get what you are saying but by adding in emojis for each country, there would be a ton of emojis and a ton of rendering. Besides that, the amount of drama caused by them would be insane. Just adding _pride_ and _blm_ was controversial. Please read the OP again. You guys are starting unnecessary drama here, and I don't want this to be closed.

That's not my suggestion. I'm just suggesting for system country flag emojis to be able to be sent in comments and descriptions. Nobody has to create anything, it's already been done. Just open your emoji picker on your system and type in a country flag. Look, I get what you are saying but by adding in emojis for each country, there would be a ton of emojis and a ton of rendering. Besides that, the amount of drama caused by them would be insane. Just adding _pride_ and _blm_ was controversial.

So the unicode system? Hm. I guess that could work. Still could cause some drama but a lot less if it wasn't created by Scratch. That's not my suggestion. Unicode (system) emojis won't cause any drama. They are just country flags. Still could cause some drama but a lot less if it wasn't created by Scratch.
