Help us improve remix trees!
Updates
Currently - updates are on hiatus while I attempt to write a thesis. Be back Aug 20 or so!
7/19/2013 Bigger project boxes with animations
7/11/2013 The remixtree should be able to handle big projects tree like starter projects much better now
7/3/2013 Added hearts to indicate love-its at a glance
Hi! I'm DD and I've been working on the new remix trees. You can get to them by clicking on the button with a picture of a tree on any project page.

This is a brand new feature, so we need your feedback to make it as useful as possible! Please let me know:
- What do you like about the new tree?
- What do you think we can improve?
- Report any bugs you find here!
Thanks!

Yep! I confirm, dsquare is a student in the research group that makes Scratch, and really did implement remix trees!

It looks awesome! I like that it looks more like a tree.

Looks good! I especially like the background.
I don't really like the grey color for the branches, it doesn't seem very tree-like to me.

agree… the branches should be brown and the projects, instead of a white background (around the project) it should be green like leaves. Looks good! I especially like the background.

Go to this project: http://scratch.mit.edu.ezproxyberklee.flo.org/projects/1897019/
Click on the tree.
Try to find that project in the tree. It isn't there.

I'm just glad deleted projects are shown as gone. It's a good implement/fix!

zoom in on any tree, hover over a project, and it “grows” to the wrong size

Much easier to navigate than the old 1.4 trees! I don't think unshared projects should show on the tree, though.

EDIT: and know it's starting to say… by undefined?

Wow weird, it's not even drawing the background. I'll look into it.

Yeah, that project might have the biggest remix tree on the site, and trying to load it all in at once doesn't work so well… the old remix tree put some limit on the number of things it would show, but we were hoping to get around that by having you be able to “flip through” branches instead. Looks like figuring out how to show thousands of children is still going to take some work…

I'm not sure what you mean by the wrong size?

All the “unshared” projects on the tree have been shared at some point (so maybe a person shared and then unshared or deleted that project.) We have to show those because people may have remixed those projects while they were shared. It won't show never-shared projects.
As for the edit.. oh no! I think I know what might be happening there. Thanks for pointing it out!

If I save one of my posted projects as a copy, keep some of the scripts and sprites, and post as a different project, it doesn't count as a remix or show on the tree.

My opinion on the remix trees:
So far it looks good, but it does lack a few things. I actually enjoyed the old remix trees - the new ones are very laggy and aren't as nicely designed. As far as the “tree” part goes, it feels a bit forced (thanks to the limits on projects in the tree that are on-screen at a time). It would have been better to just work off of the old design. And if it is a tree, why is it all square and grey?
If I recall correctly, wasn't there some sort of rainbowy remix visualization that was WAY back before I even came to Scratch 2.0 alpha? I enjoyed that design better.
All in all, it is pretty good. Could use some ironing out, though.

this is kind of trivial but I feel like the ground should have something on it instead of being just a plain gray rectangle

Unshared projects that are leaf nodes (edge of tree) still show up though which seems a little weird. All the “unshared” projects on the tree have been shared at some point (so maybe a person shared and then unshared or deleted that project.) We have to show those because people may have remixed those projects while they were shared. It won't show never-shared projects.
Sometimes projects get really really small though. there should be a minimum size.

also what's with the ground? the colors need a little work to make it more, you know, tree like.
