Welcome to the topic for the third Scratching the Surface server! Discuss the server and its happenings here. Scratching the Surface is a Minecraft SMP originally started by ScratchCatBoo. The topic for the previous server can be found here. Credit for the name and its changes goes to ShinyRock, CatsUnited, and Pianostar4.

If you would like to join, please make a post with your Minecraft username and edition (Java or Bedrock) so an operator can whitelist you.

Join Instructions:
If the server is not running or you are joining from Bedrock, you will be put into the Minehut lobby after attempting to join. To start and join the server, type /join sts3coded in chat. You may need to run this command several times. Be patient and keep trying every 15-45 seconds.

You need to be whitelisted to join the server. See above the IP for instructions.

Server Rules
To keep the server running smoothly, please read and follow the rules below. These rules are open to discussion!

Important Rules:

Do not do anything which would not be allowed on Scratch.
Do not intentionally grief other players' builds, items, mobs, etc. To clarify, this includes stealing.
Do not intentionally prevent others from playing the game.

Breaking any of the above rules will result in a 2 week ban.

General Rules:

PVP must be mutually agreed upon.
Do not make lava casts unless you are far away from spawn (at least 2000 blocks) and from other people's bases. This also applies to other things which may be similar to lava casting, in that they are often used for griefing.
Use common sense! Just because something is not on the list does not mean it should be done.

Breaking any of the above rules may result in a 1 week ban.

Client Mods:
Please do not use client mods which are generally considered to be hacks. This includes but is not limited to mods/resource packs which: manipulate your movement, provide x-ray abilities, or give an unfair advantage in PVP. If you are using a mod, it should not affect other players.

Using disallowed mods may result in a 1 week ban.

Server Plugins/Mods
The server runs on Fabric, which has better performance than Vanilla. We also use a few plugins for things like preventing griefing and improving performance. These are all open for discussion!

Ledger is a logging tool which keeps track of things like broken blocks, items removed from chests, mobs killed, etc. If a griefer joins the server and destroys something, we can use Ledger to figure out who the griefer was and restore the destruction, at least partially.

Carpet is a tool which has many features which can be used to tweak the game. Currently, it is being used for performance monitoring and adding a few custom commands. On Java, you should see a TPS and MSPT monitor in your tab menu screen.

Lithium is a overall performance improvement for Fabric, and Phosphor is a light engine performance improvement.

Geyser and Floodgate are used to allow Bedrock players to join the Java server. Both are run and controlled by Minehut separately from the server.

Inv View is used to when somebody steals items to help see what was stolen and avoid duplications from Ledger rollbacks.

There are few other Fabric mods which are needed to use the above tools. The Fabric API (used by most Fabric mods), FabricProxy-Lite (used by Minehut), and Fabric Language Kotlin (used by Ledger).

We also use a few Datapacks. Currently, we are using AFK Display, Track Statistics, Track Raw Statistics, Silence Mobs, More Mob Heads, Player Head Drops, and Wandering Trades Mini Blocks from Vanilla Tweaks. Adding more is open to discussion!

There are a few custom commands added using the Carpet mod. The commands run Scarpet scripts which I have programmed. Currently, the only notable command is /fkadv, which can be used to send a fake advancement in chat. I have also created a script to update the mystery statistic in the tab menu with the value from everyone's statistics.

PVP Clarifications (January 7, 2022)
Before PVPing, please say something like “pvp?” “ok” to make it clear that you consent. If you don't consent, please say “stop” at the start of the fight to make it clear that you don't consent. If you go along with the fight and don't say anything until the end, it can be hard to tell if both sides were ok with the fight. Using chat also leaves a record in the logs that I can check if really necessary.

Using chat to give PVP consent is not a hard rule. Exchanging a few test hits back and forth first may be enough if you have a past history of sparring. You might also have an existing agreement to allow pvp for fun.

Please do not PVP during actual arguments, particularly if people are actually upset or angry. PVP will only escalate the situation. Even if somebody did something wrong, that isn't an excuse to PVP them. Consider taking a break instead.

Spawn Preservation (December 4, 2021)
Please don't make your starter bases in the spawn area. We would like to plan out spawn slightly more than last time and avoid having random farms, starter bases, ect. mixed in with shops, decorative builds, and stuff.

Awesome! Sadly I don't have access to my computer this weekend but I'm so excited to get started on Monday after school.

Also, how about adding more mob heads and player head drops from Vanilla Tweaks? They sound like cool additions which could make for cool trophy items.
