in the early 20th century, there was a massive fad for products with radium in it, since they didn't really know just how bad it was for you. they put it in stuff like makeup, golf balls, toothpaste, and so on, because, you know, it looked cool. nowadays ANDRA, which handles french radioactive waste, finds areas with dangerous amounts of trace radiation with old advertising posters.
