should just get rid of gifs in general (not including mine)
That would be extremely bad. Sure, it would get rid of annoying moving pictures, but then again, what about gifs like mine that took 4 hours to make? And my brother Superdoggy's icon took 7 hours give or take! Unrealisation… Mikeono102… Nathmorr… Tomo2… Kewl999… Techytester… Will_Wam… FaceOS… Shadowspear1… BSH1… R2Dav2… GrannyCookies… RememberNovember… TheBlackDiamond… StandardToaster… need I continue?

Yes, because mine took about a minute to find a GIF from the internet :3 (although I don't know who about half those people are)so, am I supposed to be impressed? cuz I'd rather see that time spent making a good projectshould just get rid of gifs in general (not including mine)

Yes, mine! xD
I really think that there should just be an option instead.

So… I spent four hours and you want that to go all down the drain. A lot of other people spent a long time on their gif icons too. Besides, why are you telling me what I should use my time for?

Well, if every single icon became like this: http://scratch.mit.edu.ezproxyberklee.flo.org/projects/25562181/ and everybody wanted to make the most annoying icon, I would understand. But they're not. Getting rid of the animation in icons is practically shoving creativity (and hard work!) out of the window.

(+1) Hm, what about an option to turn .GIF animations off at your profile settings? This could include studio thumbnails as well.

Maybe the logos could be static (un-moving) images and when the mouse hovers over an image that has been animated it could start moving and then stop moving when the mouse is no longer over it. No creativity wasted and no annoyance unless you want it. Win-win.

Indifferent, but the cursor hides some of the image.

How about a button on the profile, says show icon gif or something like that? You can still have your gif, but keep peoples eyes and heads from hurting.

Hmm, but that makes it so annoying for the people who want the gifs on. Mousing over every icon to view it is really tedious. I think perhaps an option to turn on and off gif images in the account settings would be good, and also a way to set both a static image and a gif for your icon so that it isn't caught on the wrong frame.

I semi-support the idea of having an option to hide/show gifs on Scratch, if only because it might give people seizures.
I do not support the original idea, because people might like their spinny images and I don't think the whole of Scratch should change for one person's opinion.
The Scratch Team could dedicate themselves to judging who's icons are allowed, but I think trying to police people's icons will take a very long amount of time, and what counts as “annoying icons” could be subjective.
Current work-arounds
- In Firefox, you can download an add-on that prevents .gifs from showing. This effect also applies to .gifs outside of Scratch, but if you're someone who's a photosensitive epileptic then you should have this anyway…But there's nothing stopping you from viewing projects on Scratch that might give seizures (a whole other issue)
- As far as I know, Internet Explorer and Firefox have options to turn off all images.

It's called ‘artistic talent’ and ‘expressing yourself’; if people want to spend that much time on gif icons, they should be able to go right ahead regardless of what you happen to think is a good use of time. Your icon can say a lot about you, and so perhaps people would like to make a good (or accurate) impression; if you make a really impressive gif icon, that might tell other users that you spend time on these things– projects included– and are worth having your projects looked at.so, am I supposed to be impressed? cuz I'd rather see that time spent making a good projectshould just get rid of gifs in general (not including mine)

Then there's me who just adores a certain insane computer…

True. Maybe an n-pixel frame area around the picture could be active for mouse detection. Or the username. Indifferent, but the cursor hides some of the image.
For the static image, creative Scratchers could come up with a way to indicate they have an animated GIF. Then you would only have to mouse over those indicating animation.
Or a play/pause button below the image.

That's okay. Then tablet/smarthphone users wouldn't be able to view GIFs.

Or have a play/pause button below the image.
