Size Limitations for Projects

Before diving right into the issue I'm facing, I am well aware of the fact that the expansion of servers is costly and do not come at a low price. While many Scratchers (myself included) would love to raise the size limit for projects, I do understand that it is virtually impossible to arbitrate a figure that will satisfy the Scratch Team and the rest of the community. Therefore, in spite of my sincere hope that this curtailment will eventually be eradicated entirely with Scratch's constant growth, my expectations aren't too optimistic in the short term.

However, the problem I'm posed with which bothers me immensely is that the same restrictions apply for the offline editor. Currently, I am developing a graphically demanding game without any ambitions of releasing it on Scratch (due to the aforementioned limitations). I was notified today that I would exceed the confined value of 50 MB with the addition of an extra costume to a sprite. As my purpose of designing this project is solely for home-use and nothing else, I find it rather pointless to be prevented from progressing beyond a certain point if it isn't going to clog the Scratch servers or incur supplementary costs. The 1.4 software enabled unlimited sizes of project creation and to me, it makes absolutely no sense why this should be any different with the new version.

I'd be happy if a Scratch Team member would please address this complication and contribute his/her opinion. Honestly, I believe this ought to be changed. What do you guys think?

For sure if it's not going to clog up a server, why make size limitations? I support

Nice to see more support for this. After all, this change is completely doable and makes much sense.

The Scratch Team don't seem to be very active on this part of the forums, though. We might have to resort to another method in order to contact a member of the Scratch Team who could help out with this topic.

Support for intense projects. How about moving it up to 60 MB?

Would it affect projects that have already been made? (My apologies, I am not very familiar with this kind of technology stuff. Forgive me if the answer was already stated!!)

No. We're increasing the size limit, not decreasing it.

10MB extra isn't a significant increase for the scope of the project I'm making, unfortunately, and I'm sure there are many other Scratchers out there who'd like to program projects of this size offline, without any limitations. If the 1.4 editor (which never had an online editor) allowed projects of unlimited size to be programmed offline, it only seems more sensible to remove the limit on the 2.0 offline editor completely.

No worries for the question; thanks for asking.

It wouldn't affect projects that have already been made, seeing as we're calling for the offline editor's size limit to be removed entirely. This means projects of much larger size could be worked on offline, but not necessarily uploaded online (if it exceeds the current 50MB upload limit). While it would be great if the Scratch Team could increase the online editor's limit as well, it is understandably a costly procedure to carry out in expanding the servers and such. I do hope, though, that the online limit could also be increased sometime in the near future, as this is something I've been hearing amongst the community for a while now.

I would like 100mb but 80 seems reasonable.

Support, even though I make projects that go nowhere near the limit.

Support. To get a ST to easily see something, report it. But only do it if you think that the issue is SO important that it needs their immediate attention.

My concern is that a lot of people use the offline editor with the intention of eventually uploading the project to the site (I use it this way myself), It would be a bummer to go to do that and then have it rejected by the site because it is too large.

I guess the best of both worlds would be to have the off-line editor warn you when you go over the online editor - but not prevent you from doing so. I'm not sure what the best way to have it do so would be - a one-time check the first time you exceed it? A warning whenever it saves? Have it remove the share buttons when the project gets too big?

A warning whenever it saves would seem to me perhaps the best way to go about it.

What about the others – what do you guys all think?

Warning you should be the best way to go. I never use the offline editor, though. How about these three suggestions?

*Box with red header*
WARNING:
This project exceeds the 50 MB limit. Should I save your project anyway?
Yes No

*Box with red header*
WARNING:
You are trying to upload a large project (>50 MB) to Scratch. Proceed?
Yes No

*Box with red header*
WARNING:
You have uploaded a large project (>50 MB) to Scratch. Should I inform the ST?
Yes No

Although it would be brilliant if the upload limit was increased (and I know many people already share the same sentiments and would agree with me here), the greatest issue being discussed here is that users are unable to program a project bigger than 50MB offline, even if it is not intended for upload. Your suggestions would be good if our sole objective was to suggest an increase in the upload limit.

However, there have been many appeals with regard to the upload limit already, and I believe the Scratch Team have been on record for saying that they plan to increase this limit in future updates to the program.

when the project goes over 50 mb the share button becomes red. when you click it a message comes up saying something along the lines of:
this project cannot be uploaded because it is over the 50 mb limit.

That would work too, although I'd personally prefer a message box with a warning whenever it saves a project over 50MB.

I do hope this update to the offline editor comes soon so that I can get back to programming that large project of mine.
