Remove public follower count.

THIS IS NOT A JOKE. IT'S A SERIOUS SUGGESTION, THAT I THINK WOULD SOLVE SOME PROBLEMS ON THE SCRATCH SITE.

Ok, anyone who's been on the forums for more than 5 minutes will have seen all those people getting frustrated bcause they have less than X amount of followers. To prevent this, we could remove the follower count. It's a fairly drastic solution, but it might work. Perhaps a user would be able to see their own count, but not more.

Well, you could easily see how many pages of followers a user has, multiply by 60, and get a rough estimate of how many followers they have.

I was searching for duplicates, and I stumbled upon this. Although it was closed by the OP, it contains some good points about why this should be made known.

That takes more time and effort. I don't think younger users would bother with/think of this, and most older users who do do it, are probably able to see that scratch isn't about followers.

Why is popularity such a big issue? It doesn't matter. No support, as this doesn't have much use.

I'm not saying popularity is an issue, I'm saying that people getting frustrated by a lack of popularity is. Scratch is a coding website, who needs to know how many follows someone else has?

You're completely ignoring the link I sent.

No support. Why does this need to be removed? It’s a nice feature and is a little competitive and fun.

They've removed the count before, and since the project count in studios (which had been capped only in studio pages) on the mystuff page now also is capped, I think it's possible they'll implement this (probably when they get around to redesigning user profile pages, which will probably be within the decade)

Maybe it can just be hidden from the website, so the actual count can still be found using the API

No support. People should not get frustrated from that, and they should just learn themself or listen to other people

Just because people shouldn't doesn't mean people won't

That's avoiding the problem.
If Scratch were to remove follower counts one day, don't you think word would spread about “How to figure how many followers someone has”?

Yeah, I do agree with this. Despite the fact that they're not even features, plenty of Scratchers are trying to figure out how to follow themselves, how to remix their own projects, how to feature unshared projects on their profile, and how to make projects with animated thumbnails. The fact that these aren't “easy” to do doesn't really stop them from doing it.

Let me start that saying that scratch isn't about fame, I like the follower count because it allows me to see who enjoys my projects and who supports me and when they started following me. To users who ask something like “How do I get followers!?!1” I ussally reply something like this:

Me when I'm replying to the question above wrote:

For starters, scratch isn't about fame, however there are two main ways to get followers: F4F and by making good projects. F4F however is often frowned upon because it is seen as a illigetiment way to gain followers. Most of the people you see with a lot of followers have gotten there becuase they make good projects. Keep this in mind as you continue scratching! –Explosion–

The follower count is COMPLETELY useless! It's only there for bragging rights and for people to get attached to that number and try and get famous.

A follower should only exist to be notified when a creator makes a new project. There shouldn't be a goal to try and raise the limit.

Scratch is NOT a social media, its an educational website. Yet children overlook education for popularity on the internet, and it's kinda ruining Scratch.

A good 45% of scratch only cares about the fame. They are so attached to a number. They start advertising, f4fing, doing ANYTHING they can to get famous.

Scratch is slowly branching away from being an educational website, but hopefully this suggestion will turn it right back around.

(btw when i say count i mean the actual tab on the profile page that shows the followers aswell)

Hello, I admit that I also notice that many people turn to popularity, those leads to perilous situations. A very quick example: There is a scratcher who will cause a scandal on the French scratch because he has been identified with more than 50 inactive follower accounts which belonged to him all. In addition it completely prevents the divercity of projects on scratch because as soon as something works, everyone does the same … So since the release of greenOS there are an immeasurable number of operating systems such as redOS, yellowOS. .. And the most common are the platformers, without exaggeration, I think there are between 1000 and 10000 platformers which all use exactly the same and unique script without remixing and just changing the backgrounds. And it remembers super easily, they are fixed the characters in exactly the same movements regardless of the project, the red always corresponds to the lava, the orange and the purple to the trampolines … Still other projects: Papaer Minecraft, 3D Minecraft, Mario, A scratchnapped adventure … In short everyone does the same thing that works just for followers. Now I would like to make my little suggestion, as I find that the fact of no longer seeing the followers a little too radical, I think earlier that we should remove the number of followers, anyway scratchstats will always end up finding a way to count them …

Maybe a compromise is we could make it only show the newest followers?

btw, removing the follower count is a huge part of the original suggestion

Neutral.
Benefit: It could stop the greedy scratchers from begging for more followers on a daily basis.
Drawback: Without the follow system, people couldn't show that they like a ton of a Scratcher's projects, they appreciate their help on a project, they appreciate their friendly comment on a project. They may miss the Scratcher's projects too, which in turn can be unpleasant.

No, the follow system would still exist, just the public amount and the list of followers wouldn't.

No support. I get where you're coming from, but it would be confusing without the follower count. Maybe we could make it easier for unpopular Scratchers to get noticed!
