What you could do instead is set up a studio (go to My Stuff and click “+New Studio”), then invite all your students to curate it. Make sure they remain curators or else they have too much power over the studio (which is bad!). Tell them to follow the studio so that if a teacher/instructor posts an assignment they are all notified. Students can add their project to the studio by either clicking Add Projects in the studio or going to their project (which is shared) and clicking the green checkmark next to their class studio's name under the “Studios” tab (directly under the project player).
That doesn't solve the problem of students with no email addresses.
The school I went to gave you a county made email.
Just ask for their parents email? Scratch doesn't need you to verify it, but if a student gets banned it would be easy to notify the parents, as scratch sends a thing telling the email about it, but if you don't want to use an email use a shared account, just make sure they work on their OWN project.

This does sound like it could be useful - but what if your school is doing Scratch but you've already got a Scratch account? That'd mean you would have two accounts, one for school and your actual one.
You are allowed to have more than one account.
Yeah, but it'd be annoying.

I'm planning on setting up an email address for each class and having them use that one. I'm also going to make sure that every student takes home a note that needs to be signed before they set up their account on Scratch – that way there are no surprises or anything like that, AND that way the parents can check out what their kids are doing.

Not a bad idea. I'm assuming you teach elementary school? If so, the parents would want to see what their kids are doing. Perhaps the note home should also mention your username so that parents know you are their teacher, in case this happens:

Student1: That's bad!
Student2: I'm telling!
wkelly42: Now kids, break it up.
Student1: NO! IT IS BAD!
wkelly42: Seriously, stop…
Student 1: ME GONNA REPORT YOU.
wkelly42: Stop now, please.
Parent: Is wkelly42 a student?

Scratch should use Clever.com. This site helps with the FERPA issues.

I am wondering if any progress has been made with the class accounts. I noticed that Google CS First creates a Scratch account for club members- LOVE! I am about to create a set of shared class accounts (n=30) for my kids (starting w/100 5th graders, possibly moving down to 4th and 3rd as well). Thanks!

I guess I must be crazy…

We just started a new trimester, and I wanted my kids to join using the class(room) I had last trimester on Scratch…

I KNOW that there was an option to have kids in a class(room) because the one student who hadn't signed up yet joined it! Now it is gone!

Was I imagining it? I certainly hope not… if so, I guess it's time for early retirement!!!

Okay, Support, is it just me, or was there a class(room) option available in October???

Thanks!

That sounds more like what Code.org has. I've got all of my kids separated by their classroom teacher's name, 1st through 5th. Makes it REALLY easy. They have three different courses (4, once the beta is done for the 4th), so there's something for each grade level.

Another option you might like is to try Itch (The scratch teacher dashboard); we don't require valid email addresses for students (and you can also just import student account information from a CSV excel file if you have the data available already to create all their accounts.

We support separating students into areas however you'd like so you can see each classes projects all in one place without your students needing to do anything special at all.

We have a ton of teachers that love using this so they can manage their students more easily.

You can create a gmail address just for a class. Example myclass@gmail.com. Then give each student a suffix: myclass+student1@gmail.com; myclass+student2@gmail.com; etc. It has to have the plus sign but google ignores everything after the plus sign.

You'll receive anything mailed to that address. The students can't log in to the email account because only you have that password.

That's cool, I didn't know that! I have always wanted a way to do this for my club! Keep posting more helpful information! Thanks for spreading the knowledge!

I like this solution a lot, except it would end up costing me $500 a year (I've got 100 3rd graders, 90 4th graders, and 97 or so 5th graders to manage). Don't have the budget this year, but it's an option for the future. Thanks!

I am using Scratch with an elementary age after school club. It would be nice if I could create an educator account with students accounts attached to mine.
We are currently working on a student/teacher account system, but we're not not sure when it will be ready yet.
Is this fixed yet? Is there a teacher/student dashboard yet?

Is there a way to connect students with teachers yet? I am wanting to set this up for my 6th graders. Any help on how and what to do to get started would be so awesome! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Sadly, no. You can have them all follow the teacher or make a studio led by a teacher and invite them.

Or they could merely use a school email?

This is what I'm doing, and it seems to work pretty well. My kids think it's cool for the teacher to be following them back (lol). I can monitor whatever they're doing, and I put their best stuff into studios that I link to from the school website.

I admit, I'd rather have it set up so I can just set up classes and link them to teachers like Code Studio does, but this is working ok for now. THe only real work is the first day, when I have to authorize student accounts when I get home (I don't use my teacher email address, and I can't access Gmail from school).

You can use Itch, the Scratch Teacher Dashboard to create lessons and have your students projects all in one place for the teacher. Check it out!

I've been letting my students use existing accounts. They just have to let me know what it is. Only a few so far have existing accounts.
