I would LOVE to see Scratch set up a system similar to Code.org, where teachers can register students in classes without having to have an email address. When a teacher signs up for an educator account, they get a code for each different class, so they can manage classes. They give the student that code, and the student can register for the site without having to have an email address. This would make it a LOT easier to use Scratch in elementary grades because of COPPA.

What you could do instead is set up a studio (go to My Stuff and click “+New Studio”), then invite all your students to curate it. Make sure they remain curators or else they have too much power over the studio (which is bad!). Tell them to follow the studio so that if a teacher/instructor posts an assignment they are all notified. Students can add their project to the studio by either clicking Add Projects in the studio or going to their project (which is shared) and clicking the green checkmark next to their class studio's name under the “Studios” tab (directly under the project player).

That doesn't solve the problem of students with no email addresses.

Ah, that is a problem. Have you talked to them about setting up an email account OR do they already have a school email account? They will need one for signing up on Scratch, I believe. Once they're signed up they won't need to use the email address except for password recovery.

The e-mail address is just for password recovery. Students can sign up using a fake e-mail address (they just need to remember their password very well).

Looks like I can have them all register using my email address - probably just make a spare Gmail account just for this.

That said, I still LOVE the way Code.org set theirs up ;-)

Anyways, support.
I wouldn't have much use for it as my school uses 1.3 and the only lesson using it is a one script maze game where you can just move through walls, but other schools could DEFINATELY use it

Hi, I am a technology teacher and would like to have each student (no emails) save their work. How do I do that? Love creative solutions that do not require passwords or email accounts.

As stated before, you can use a fake email address, as the only thing it is used for is password recovery.

But if you don't want to do that, you can use the offline editor. With it, you can save project files (.sb2), but you can only share projects if you have a scratch account.

Hmm, it sounds like creating individual Scratch accounts aren't a good solution for you.

Luckily, you don't need a Scratch account to use Scratch 2.0. All your students need to do is click the “Create” link at the top of the webpage to open the Scratch 2.0 editor (but they will need to save the project locally on a computer). Alternatively, there is a beta offline version of the 2.0 editor for working completely offline.

This year I am setting up student accounts using my own email address (with parent permission, of course). Students are going to use the same user name they use currently for the Accelerated Reader program, so they can remember their user name (these are third and fourth graders, after all!).

I am using Scratch with an elementary age after school club. It would be nice if I could create an educator account with students accounts attached to mine.

We are currently working on a student/teacher account system, but we're not not sure when it will be ready yet.

I'm working on a kid-friendly classroom management system for PK-5 that doesn't require students to have email addresses. It was designed to let students on shared computing devices (iPads, desktops) easily share videos, images and files for school work in a walled online space.

Because some of our Beta classrooms use Scratch, we plan to add support for .sb and .sb2 files playback. While this doesn't have remix and other neat features found on the MIT site, we support multiple file formats under one roof, which makes life easier for everyone. After all, as much as we love Scratch, it's only one of the many tools used in the classroom.

A few caveats. Since we don't require students to have Scratch accounts, we don't support “cloud” editing of Scratch files, so students have to save Scratch files to disk first before opening them and must upload from disk to share. Also, Scratch files won't playback on iPads.

You can create a gmail address just for a class. Example myclass@gmail.com. Then give each student a suffix: myclass+student1@gmail.com; myclass+student2@gmail.com; etc. It has to have the plus sign but google ignores everything after the plus sign.

You'll receive anything mailed to that address. The students can't log in to the email account because only you have that password.

This does sound like it could be useful - but what if your school is doing Scratch but you've already got a Scratch account? That'd mean you would have two accounts, one for school and your actual one.
