An idea to improve "key [ v] pressed?"

Have you ever tried to select a key which you have to press to move, but didn't want to waste time scrolling through the list of those keys?
Well, this feature would solve this problem!

“What are you talking about?” Well, I just think that if you show a picture of a keyboard (with keys written on it) instead of a list of all those keys when you click on the
<key [ v] pressed?>
dropdown,* it would save time.
*This also applies to
when [ v] key pressed
“Where did you get this idea from?” I thought that the picture of a “clock” that shows up when you click on the
point in direction ( v)
dropdown is useful, so why not also adding something similiar to
<key [ v] pressed?>
(Also, I got the idea from here.)
“Why not making it so you can just press the key you want and it will be there?” See this post.

Support.

It would really save time.

Would the incompatible keys be grayed out? And what about the numpad? Not all keyboards have a number pad.

Yes, they would. However, since the sensing blocks are light blue, they would be light blued out!
And what about the numpad? Not all keyboards have a number pad.
No, it wouldn't be shown. The numbers would be above the letters.
(Not-so-)fun fact: I never use my number pad or any keyboard shortcuts (okay, I do use shortcuts, but rarely).

Support. This would prevent users get lost in the that long list.

support, but why not have it so that when you press a key that is compatible, it sets the block to that?

Okay, but I think that it would be a little bit confusing* for New Scratchers to try out some keys that aren't compatible and get “Sorry, but this key is not compatible.” every time. When you click there and it shows a keyboard, you quickly know which keys are compatible (and which aren't).
This is also not a good idea for tablet users, since you** have to wait before a real keyboard appears (as far as my own experience goes), but you could just tap and select the key without the delay.
*I don't know how to describe that.
**Okay, I admit it: it works at least for me.

Honestly the mouse is my archenemy now because it's been torturing my wrist so I use keyboard shortcuts whenever possible.

Fun fact: If you press Tab when you finish typing a Scratch forum reply, and then hit enter, you can submit it without having to touch your mouse.

Read carefully — this isn't quite a duplicate. The main suggestion here is not simply to allow support for all keys — rather, when you click the dropdown for this block, a picture of a keyboard should pop up so you can easily click on that button.

ohh

support

Definitely saves time endlessly scrolling to find a key in my opinion too.

That would be cool and is a better design that having to scroll through a long list containing each letter or number (and the scrolling was worse in Scratch 2), though I would also like to see a feature on that dropdown where you could input the key you want just by pressing it on your keyboard.

Support. This would save a fair amount of time if you are using a lot of keys.

Which keyboard would it show? QWERTY, AZERTY, or Dvorak? Semi-support if this is chosen in the settings (with QWERTY probably at default). Keyboard input for that would also be helpful…

It would show QWERTY (and the idea of choosing it in the settings is also good).
(Fun? fact: I'm using a Czech keyboard where Y and Z are swapped, so I'm using a QWERTZ keyboard! Also, you have to press Shift to type numbers.)
Keyboard input for that would also be helpful…
So you mean that if you wanted to select a key, you could just type the key you want?
Okay, I edited the original post. Read the last two sentences there.

Oh yeah I forgot it can't be “confusing for new users”.
I'll still support this suggestion though because it's a better (and probably still faster even without my suggestion) way to select a key for the <key pressed> block, and it looks a lot better visually.

I agree… How can this possibly be complicated?

Just make it so hovering over an unsupported grayed out key gives no result, this way the kids won't have some foreign thing popping up.

Also, I'm slightly offended by the statement about how the stereotype of new Scratchers was that they were young. Do I really have to promote myself?

Also make it so you can press the key on the keyboard to make it go into the block. Support!
