Official Monster World strategy and balance thread

Hello everyone!
Welcome to the official strategy and balance discussion thread for the preview version of Monster World
If you're here, that means that you either already played Monster World (in which case - thank you),
or found this thread randomly in the list of discussions, in which case you might want to check out Monster World before continuing to read:
Link to the project page on the Scratch website
Link to the Turbowarp page of the game (runs a little smoother)
I created this thread so that people can talk about their favorite strategies, abilities and builds and discuss the balance of the game.
- If you have trouble getting far in the game, this thread might be for you!
- Similarly, if you think you got the hang of the game and might have beaten it once or more times, post what strategy you used to get there!
- If you think an enemy, ability or item is under- or overpowered, be sure to share your thoughts as to why you think that is and how it could be improved!
These are just some ideas. If you have anything else you want to discuss about MW, let nothing stop you!
If you just want to give general feedback, I suggest commenting on the actual project page.
This thread is meant to be for deeper discussion of the game and it's mechanics.
As always, keep it civil and enjoy discussing and strategizing!

I'm gonna kick this one off with a question:
Have you guys beaten the game yet and if so, what ability was the one that carried you the most? Was there an ability you always loved to see?

Please could you balance Swamp Zombies a bit? They are way too OP. Also, the fact that they come in pairs is annoying, because that's just double the OP Swamp Zombie. When I play I just only do cave, just because I don't want to risk fighting them.

I agree that the Swamp is really annoying, but the game is supposed to have risky and less risky options. The risky option is for runs in which you notice your deck of abilities is working really well and you need something more challenging. The Swamp is there for that. I nerfed their Max. HP a little because they are indeed currently stronger than the swamp elite, but just like the forest in biome tier 1, the swamp is supposed to be more challenging than the other biome. Thank you for the feedback!

This game was excellent.
Blizzard + Ice Wall + Doll thing/Levitate goes a long long way
Also, maybe buff the king slime a bit? In comparison to the other group, he is lacking in power. Massively.

Answer to question:
I like the “Assasinate” attack (or whatever it is, the one that does the most damage), as well as the scroll thingies.
A decent strategy I found helpful:
Try to spend stat points on dexterity and intellect first, they are most helpful. When battling multiple enemies, block until you won't be damaged (or can't block anymore), then spend the remaining energy attacking the enemies that are going to block. Also, at the beginning when fighting a tough enemy, it helps to spend your energy setting up auras instead of immediately attacking, especially when they are blocking or doing something else that doesn't deal any damage to you.
I hope this helps someone win, it certainly helped me a lot.

Funnily enough I rather get health and attack up first.
I always go to the boss monsters, so yeah. That may explain that

Thank you very much! I think the king slime has an interesting intent pattern, but it doesn't really work out the way I thought.
He attacks, reduces your draw for the turn that he's planning to block so you have a smaller chance to hurt him and then he attacks again.
I guess the grassland elites really shouldn't be all that crazy, maybe the Plaque Sorcerer is a little to strong for that matter?
But yeah, once you get a good turn to activate levitate safely, it does wonders for the coming turns. Things costing 1 less is just an incredible bonus. Also, the wallfish doll is a mandatory item in hardcore mode hahah

I had a friend just go full tank, only spending stat points on health and dexterity, trying to get as much block as possible (in hardcore mode). It definitely worked for me when I tried it but the final boss just got so strong over time that my puny slashes didn't do anything at some point hahaha
So I think the right balance is important. Or you go with the “Attack is the best defense” strategy like @awesomegamer11

I agree that the swamp is two hard. I always use the cave instead.

I also go for health first. After I get five levels are start spreading out and doing the others evenly but doing the blue and green before the attack. (Help! What are the other two called?)

Interesting. Yeah, I may have forgotten to mention that the success rate of my method isn't too great.

I love to use the cold wave attack a lot with the curse of the drawers. I banish all the other cards till I have only the seven in my hand and since the frost attack is free, I can use it till the battle is done. The only problem is that it is very hard to get to that point though. I used it to defeat the slime boss (twice) , B team, cave spider and the Boss not two mention several normal attacks. Not in the same game though. I'm gonna kick this one off with a question:

The spike ball things are really hard to beat. I stuck to plains after I died 5 or 6 times by those nasty little hedgehogs. I find the bosses are easier to defeat with the right cards than fighting several of the lower ranking monsters at one time. I think it is because it is harder to block damage if there are more than one monster attacking. The bosses tend to pack a punch when they try to attack with a damage value higher than 14. The cute blue creature is really helpful in the battle. I never choose the swamp or forest so you might want to make them a little easier. I just found out about the two monsters flamingo and the druid creature today!

All that coupled with ice spear, frost armor, flex, blizzard, deep-freeze, the first ninjutsu, and aqua burst can pack quite a punch. Other favorites are flood back, tidal strike, geyser, clunk, heavy kick and judo chop.
Oh, I'm aware of the cold wave infinite combo and I absolutely love it hahah - glad it doesn't work in standard mode

I'm a huge fan of flood back and tidal strike aswell. Sometimes I pick Clunk!-Hammer only for those Stony encounters in the caves cause it's basically a one hit kill

Once you get the strategy for the Pykers (the spike ball things), they're super easy. Just play your defends before attacking and stay patient. A turn in which you do not do damage to them isn't as big of a deal as you might think. Just play it safe and you can pretty much perfect the encounter every time.
And for the cute blue creature, do you mean the Wallfish? That's one of my favorite items
