Vexillology thread - Good flags, bad flags, flag critics and experts welcome
So, I was browsing scratch the other day, searching for stuff and I found these ‘flags’…
(Remixes of https://scratch-mit-edu.ezproxyberklee.flo.org/projects/37743412/ )
I am not trying to be rude and I know that it was just for fun and not meant to be serious but most of them are horrible
Even the flag of Potacello beats it.
So in this thread I'd like to discuss stuff about flags and Vexillology and stuff.
So, one of the main things that destroyed the flags in the contest were:
- Abnormal colours
- Writing
- Gradients
- Overcomplication
And, perhaps the biggest killer,
- Images that were uploaded from somewhere
Despite the fact that the contest ws for fun, I think that we should make our flags more realistic. Therefore, I am going to introduce you to my guide.
1. The flag must clearly symbolise the object it is representing, though not so much you literally just put the object onto the flag.
2. Use simple colours - Red, white and blue are very common, but black, yellow and green also work. Any other colours, such as pink, purple, lime, bright blue, orange and so on do not fit in with the theme.
3. It must be simple. Unless the severe complexity is a sign of the object, try to simplify it as much as possible. Imagine that your flag is flying on a flagpole a few tens of metres away - it'd be tiny. Make sure the design does not make the flag look like a mess from that distance.
4. It must be recognisable. Obviously you don't want a flag nobody knows about.
If you have aany more ideas, or anything to do with vexillology, please comment below.
