Add a platformer tutorial!

I think the scratch team should add a platformer tutorial so more scratchers can make platformers as they are fun also, because i am also struggling on how to make a platformer as the other tutorials are not working for me ,thank u!

I don't get it. Would you explain more? I can't really think of what this would really look like.

So, you mean like in the Tips section? If so, support. Learning to make platformers is very useful.

Support for a “tips” thing that has a tutorial on making platformers. I probably wouldn't use it much, though..

I think since scratch has a simple clicker tutorial we should get a simple platformer tutorial. Maybe the cover image could look something like this?

Why does Scratch need to create a tutorial for platformers when users have already made so many? Also, what will be the focus of the tutorial? If you want to learn how to create a platformer and understand the mechanics, then @griffpatch_tutor’s tutorial at https://scratch-mit-edu.ezproxyberklee.flo.org/projects/67727504/ is a good one. If you want to make it compact, then you might use someone else’s engine, or if you want it to involve velocity/offset scrolling, then another tutorial would be appropriate. Finally, there are already a lot of generic platformers all over Scratch. Making a tutorial for them will only worsen the problem.

Most beginner scratchers probably don't want griffpatch or anyone like him. Plus it would be a slight step up in difficulty from the other tutorials. And maybe if we had more people making platformers on their own instead of copying someone else we would get more original platformers.

Are you making assumptions about users? Users may do something different than what you assumed. That's what you did topics ago.

What about at school?not everyone can go on different accounts at school, so this could help them.
Also there’s nothing really wrong with generic platformers, they’re annoying but they let people learn how to use scratch and feel good if it gets popular.school accounts don’t really get on trending too much anyway.

The Scratch Wiki also has some tutorials that range from basic to semi-advanced. You can see some general information on this page. For a basic platformer, check out this article. For a more advanced one, check out this one.

Other types of platformers, such as scrolling platformers and a physics engine are all available too!

And if none of those options suits your needs, then check out the plentiful amount of example platformers on the main article.

No Support
Platformers are mostly related to physics stuff, so it confuses kids who don't have knowledge on physics. The aim of Scratch is to learn and code, not just simply code. That's why we need to understand what's going on in the scripts. Also, there are already a lot and lot of tutorials for platformers.

Just a reminder that there are absolutely no downsides to a tutorial being added to the Scratch website, particularly one that is as simple and widespread as a platformer tutorial.

Platformers are no harm in my opinion. Coding up platformers would increase kids coding knowledge, animation skills, creativeness in a way most of us don't think. So with that in mind; adding a platformer tutorial would not be a problem. And the cover image you've suggested doesn't look like a platformer at all. (sorry) Think about it this way, there are many clicker tutorials but the ST has made an official clicker tutorial so what's wrong with a platformer tutorial? And scratch should definitely add some advanced tutorials.

Ah, that one. Well it was based off of my experience. I learned about turbowarp soon after joining since many descriptions link to it.

Personally, I have only learnt of turbowarp after spending 3 years on scratch, while I was able to make a platformer (without any tutorial) at about the same time. I knew about youtube and scratch tutorials LONG before any of that. People differ from each other.

Also, notice "scratch has a simple clicker tutorial". Clickers are simple and begginer friendly, platformers are not

This is one good reason for adding the platfomer tutorial. It can help teach kids how to code physics in games. What if they want to be a game maker? They would have to learn this as a start up.

Plus Scratch's tutorials are simple enough you can understand them but if you follow a tutorial on youtube like Griffpatch's a beginner Scratcher would have no how the code works.
