If you change your email address, it will ask you to confirm the new one. This is the screen you see:

Notice how there is no option to cancel the change, so if you misspell the new email address you are stuck not being able to get the confirmation email and not being able to change it to the correct address. What makes it worse is that the previous screen has no double entry or asking you to proofread, so you might not notice the mistake until it's too late.

(Please don't tell me to contact the ST - I can still use my current email and presumably emails will still be sent there until I confirm the new one, so this isn't a problem for me right now)

Have your tried changing your email again?

I can't, that is all I see when I go on the email tab of Account Settings.

Update: it looks like it times out after a week or so and lets you change it again. Still, not being able to manually cancel it is a bit of a design flaw.

Try using Contact Us. ST usually responds pretty quickly.

I agree! The same problem is still present as of the time I'm writing this post! Additionally, if the mistyped new email happens to belong to someone else who already claimed that email account in advance before you entered it in to Scratch, the owner of the email account associated with your Scratch account's new email address can click the confirmation link, reset your Scratch account's password, and lock you out of your own Scratch account with no way to get it back (as password reset emails will go to the mistyped email address that someone else already confirmed)! (If that happens, use Contact Us and reference an old resolved case number contacted from the same combination of email address and Scratch account username; in case the Scratch Team doesn't log old email changes, you might have to had used Contact Us [with the case through Contact Us already resolved, of course; that way, the Scratch Team knows that a moderator had verified the email address matched the Scratch account username at one point before the change] prior to the email getting changed to get your account back.) What's even worse is that the old email isn't even notified about the change when the new email is added and/or confirmed (one workaround is to check your account settings before getting locked out through a password change, password reset, or account deletion); kenny2scratch has a suggestion related to the lack of a notification sent to the old email here.

Although the previous email is still used because Scratch isn't sure whether the new one exists and can receive emails from no-reply@scratch.mit.edu yet (Scratch only sends an email to the new unconfirmed email if you click “Change Email” or “Resend”), not only can the email change not be cancelled before confirmation, (the OP brought this next part up as well) the previous screen doesn't request or remind any specific user to check their newly-entered email for typos before clicking “Change Email”; hence, one may assume they entered the correct email right before starting the changing process. Think about the inability to easily undo an unconfirmed email change on a Scratch account this way: if Scratch lets you restore an accidentally-deleted asset or block of code in the project editor or edit a misspelled word you accidentally entered in a forum post easily without waiting for a human moderator to respond to your request or waiting for a specific amount of time for the mistake to be undone, why doesn't Scratch do the same for unconfirmed email changes? It doesn't make sense!

An easier solution would be to just comment from the account that is facing the issue directly on a Scratch Team member's profile, since not all Scratch Team members have access to Contact Us and you would usually (if not always) get an even quicker response, especially now that the ST isn't responding that quickly through Contact Us because they need to deal with a higher surge of tickets (extra cases about using Scratch in online schools makes it take longer for the ST to respond to your specific inquiry about a different topic) during the COVID-19 pandemic. (Note: since profile comments are public, don't put your email address directly in the comment.)

You could be patient, but that would probably mean having to wait a few days for it to get cancelled automatically by the system. Also, I actually saw that someone actually posted on Paddle2See's profile (from another Scratch account username, as you can't post comments from an account with an unconfirmed email) a few months ago that they didn't receive the email confirmation link when signing up for a new Scratch account and he was able to confirm the email on behalf of the Scratcher who didn't receive the link as the ST has administrative tools that you can't see.

But even though my posts bumped an inactive thread, they were still respecting the OP's original intent of making the new thread.

It's probably just better to make a new topic in the Suggestions forums if you have a suggestion. This topic was from 2018, so chances are, their problem has already been resolved.

I've tested yesterday when I made my first post on this particular thread and followed the discussion. That still hasn't been fixed yet in 2020.

And I think you meant to say that the topic was from 2017 instead of 2018, since that's when stickfire-test started the thread. (AnimatorsParadise also bumped this thread at June 8, 2018 20:33:22, MIT timezone.)

The bug still exists so the topic is still valid. Also, unless things have changed since I was active suggestions that are just “fix this bug” do belong in this forum.

Four days, no discussion, kind of late in bumping it. However, I don't know why my report to add this bug hasn't been added to 54329's Bugs and Glitches directory yet?

Yes, it is a design flaw. The problem is that people are usually not aware of the design flaw before they join the Scratch website (and even if everyone knew, someone would forget at some point without a reminder as soon as they forgot); however, Scratch's UI also doesn't specifically mention to double-check the email before submitting it. One could also be motor-impaired and type the Enter key instead of a letter in the email address (e.g. m at the end of com, so they could end up submitting .co instead of .com and Scratch would still know the email is only well-formatted, but doesn't know if it belongs to the Scratcher) by accident to submit the form. On the other hand, sites like Epic Games and Zoom have a team that makes sure there aren't silly little design flaws like that (and that you can actually cancel an unconfirmed email change there without having to wait some time).
