Oh, that markdown.???https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Markdown
No support, markdown is a very confusing and weird programming/markup language. If it was HTML, I would support.

There, text in big and bold. Is that what you wanted?

No support, Markdown can be very confusing and weird, and would be very confusing to New Scratchers. HTML would be a better fit, because it makes more sense, and would also make sense to New Scratchers. (For example, for bold and italic in HTML , you use <b></b> and <i></i>, which make sense because B for Bold and I for Italic, while in Markdown, you use special characters which have nothing to do with Bold and Italic at all. Also, HTML is very similar to BBCode, which most New Scratchers are familiar with.)

Oh my. Markdown may be confusing, but it is sorta like quoted strings “Hi, this is a deliminator for \”something\“” and then some `other really \`confusing stuff\``
But I think it would be confusing for somebody to write an asterisk and they get confused about some werd formatting that occurs. Support for a tick box that says “Enable markdown” where the word markdown links to a Wiki article on wiki.scratch.mit.edu that will be about markdown syntax

PullJosh here.
I love this one! Major support.
Communicating through writing is hard, and not having the ability to format your text only adds to the difficulty. Using markdown means that there's no interface necessary, so new users shouldn't get especially confused, but more advanced users are free to format their text for more effective communication. The great thing about markdown (as a rebuttal to dude341) is that most often when you use asterisks you're trying to *emphasize* something, and markdown will take that natural, implied emphasis and put it into a more elegant form factor (italics). I would assume, based on your posts, dude341, that you learned HTML before hearing about Markdown, so it's only natural that you'll feel more comfortable with HTML. However, it's important to realize that new users will not have this bias. (They may even have an opposite bias favoring markdown. Keep in mind that markdown is used virtually everywhere where custom formatting is accepted. Older forum systems which use bbcode are one of the few exceptions.) Another important note for dude341 is that many markdown parsers will actually accept some basic html tags like <b>, <i>, and <u>. It's quite possible that Scratch could support both Markdown and HTML!
tl;dr Great feature idea; helpful but not intimidating to new users; better than html

For those who prefer HTML over markdown, there was once a time when HTML posted in comments actually rendered, making things like embedded projects and images possible. Unfortunately featured projects got a redirect to a user and ST members got a redirect to an image insulting the ST (which is why cheddargirl's comments are closed) and so the ST fixed it.
Markdown would prevent this from happening and only give the user formatting.

Oh, that must have been a bug. The ST would never allow arbitrary HTML in comments on purpose For those who prefer HTML over markdown, there was once a time when HTML posted in comments actually rendered, making things like embedded projects and images possible. Actually, I closed my comments off because people kept using it to publicly report stuff or spam me with project links asking to be featured. I was spared the incident with the image since my comments were closed long before then. Markdown is NOT complicated. It's way less complicated than HTML (I program in HTML).
It will be easier to say digest and type *italic* rather than <i>italic</i> Observe: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Markdown#Example
I have no idea what makes markdown so complicated. Tons of sites use variants of it, like Google+ and it's not confusing. Google+ sucks for reasons other than the fact that it employs certain parts of markdown.
Support for the ‘enable markdown’, if it's automatically turned off so previous projects don't get it turned on and have their notes messed up. Also, clicking ‘markdown’ should link to a page on Scratch detailing markdown syntax in regular English for younger scratchers.
(Also the link markdown should probably be removed for safety concerns.)
