Some of you know I'm translating Scratch in French.
So I went on the Translation Server but I still have some questions for the translation…
Can anybody of the Scratch Team help me?

Ok, so, in the website or in other places, it's written (in English) the word “Scratcher” (someone who scratchs) but I don't know how to translate it in French. Must I keep “Scratcher” ou must I use "Scratcheur“? Because in French, when it is a job's- or a function's-name, we normally put ”eur" at the end of the word…

Another is “ScratchEd” (for “Scratch Educator”). Which is the best, “professeur” (teacher), “éducateur” (educator) or “enseignant” (teacher) ?

We don't require you to use “Scratcher” to refer to someone who uses Scratch, so you should definitely use the word that makes more sense in French.

For this one I would lean on what is more normal to French speakers. Just keep in mind that the audience is probably children and their parents when deciding.

When this is referring to the ScratchEd website for educators (http://scratched.gse.harvard.edu/), I would keep it as ScratchEd since it's a proper name. Otherwise, the closest term to educator is probably the best.

I don't know how to submit, but i suggested many improvements (translation correction and typo). Last changes by smrman was sometimes totally missed.
Now nobody understand because of translation errors :
“change by” doesn't mean “remplacer par” (which is french for “To change to”)
Now we have 2blocs with same meaning (Mettre)Remplacer) but with different operations…
Same for every change by…

Yes, the problem is that some blocs have the same writing but different meanings.
The blocks in the forum, online- and offline-editor are now all differents!
I tried to solve this, but I never know ,when I'm in the translation server, which block I change when I modify the translation of one of them.

For example:

What does “change by” mean? Does it mean we change a value by another (replace), or we set a variable to a value or add () to the actual value?

In fact there is only 2 blocks:

set [ v] to []
change [ v] by (0)

In French, it should become

Mettre à ()
Ajouter à ()


All translation errors are now fixed in the French online-editor!
I've put all the “change by” in “ajouter .. à” and the “set” in “mettre”.

If there's a translation for a block, for example ‘change size by %n’, the translation is used everywhere.
However, the process that takes the po files and builds the online, offline and forum blocks can get run at different times which can lead to things being out of sync.

Also, if a string in the translation server seems confusing, I think the best thing to do is open up Scratch and try it. I know that can be time consuming if it's not clear which category it is in, but it's usually the best way to understand what it's doing.

Finally, a note for admins - only reviewed strings get included in the build. So make sure to approve changes to translations that you want updated the next time translations are deployed.
