Featured studios are studios created by Scratchers. They are chosen to be on the front page because they are interesting and creative. You can suggest a studio to be featured here: https://scratch-mit-edu.ezproxyberklee.flo.org/discuss/topic/697636/ . Featured studios are shown on the second row.

An SDS (Scratch Design Studio) is a special type of studio created by the Scratch Team that has a new prompt approximately every six weeks. These studios encourage Scratchers to make projects based on a theme. Scratch Design Studios will always be on the fourth row of the front page.

I hope that makes sense! Both are ways for you to get involved by making projects under a theme.
