scratch: x-box 360 / x-box one edition

why not create a version of scratch for the x-box 360 and x-box one? it should have all the same blocks but the key pressed Boolean and hat block would be button pressed and have A, X, Y, B, right bumper, left bumper, right trigger and left trigger. the scripting would have slightly different controls. and just three new Booleans and hat blocks that are like the button pressed but one detects left stick, one detects right stick, and one detects the D-pad

also, I understand this would take a long loong LOOONG time to make but I don't care how long it takes to create it, as long as it is made eventually

supporters: 6.5

(support=1 semi-support=0.5)

an idea for the new controls:

left stick: move mouse pointer while drawing and editing a script

right stick: change highlighted script, look around costume editing

triggers: scroll through drop downs, raise / lower number inputs and switch between scripts, costumes and sounds

bumpers: change between sprites, sprite editing and save / share / see project page

A: select (edit script / costume / sound if one is highlighted)

Y: add script / costume / sprite / sound (if editing a script it would add a new block)

X: delete script / costume / sprite / sound (if editing a script it would delete the highlighted block)

B: stop editing script / costume / sprite / sound

back: exit / enter project

start: freeze / unfreeze all scripts and sounds

oh, and you can link X-box accounts to pc accounts if you have both passwords it will cause the username on the X-box to be displayed under the featured project in the pc accounts' profile page and vice-versa (if un-linked there will be a link to pc/X-box account button in that spot)

changed / added blocks:

<button [A v] pressed?::sensing>

<left stick pushed [up v] ?::sensing>

<right stick pushed [up v] ?::sensing>

<D-pad [up v] pressed?::sensing>

(controllers connected::sensing)

when [A v] button pressed::events hat

when right stick pushed [up v]::events hat

when left stick pushed [up v]::events hat

when [controllers connected v] < (1)::events hat

when D-pad [up v] pressed::events hat

set controller [1 v] to ignored::control

set controller [1 v] to unignored::control

the “when controllers connected < ( )” block is just a new thing in the dropdown on the “when loudness < ( )” block

the controllers connected block would report how many controllers are connected at once and could be used to make un-used player sprites hide until a controller for them was turned on

the ignore / unignore blocks would be used to make sprites only sense controls from certain controllers, and there should be a checkbox for each controller when the user selects the ? button on a sprite, this feature would make 2-4 player games possible

actually, the scratch team are working on a version of scratch that doesn't need flash, they could just edit the blocks and controls of that version a little and boom, they made scratch x-box edition!

No support, because Outdated system.

what! the X-box one is the newest X-box console! and the X-box 360 is the second newest! plus I know over 100 people who have an X-box 360 and 10 that have an X-box one! and some of them have both! your reason for not giving support is invalid, also I have one

tymewalk wrote:

No support. The ST could instead make an HTML5 version of Scratch (which they are already doing) which would allow Scratch to run anywhere.

true, but it would need different controls and blocks to run properly on consoles, I DARE you to try to beat that argument!

I was looking around and couldn't find it, so I don't believe you and won't until you give me proof

colinator27 wrote:

You could connect a controller to your computer, and possibly ask them to make a Scratch extension… no support.

the point of this is not to use a controller for scratch, the point is to use scratch on an X-box!

Danfish wrote:

Semi-support, but only if there would also be a version for Wii U

sure, why not make one for all other consoles too!

sheep_maker wrote:

The controls would have to be universally mapped to the keys, however. One project might use WASD but others might use arrow keys and some use both (for those who prefer one over the other) so what would happen? Not to mention there's the mouse and sometimes the number keys to change weapons/slots in the inventory.

I don't think you understand that PC projects would be un-accessible via console and vice-versa
I think I used more “v”s in that sentence than anywhere else on scratch
(incase you didn't know via means using and vice-versa means the other way around)

If the ST is going to port Scratch beyond PCs and laptops, then they should probably start with porting Scratch to mobile devices (phones and tablets). I don't think porting Scratch to a gaming console would be worth their time. You could always see if you could find a 3rd party to develop it if you really find it necessary, but I think that a version of Scratch for Xbox would go underappreciated.

You don't need to bump your post when it's still on the front page.

If not, this would mean a lot of work for the Scratch Team.

The Scratch Team could spend their energy on something else. No support.

There are converters for Flash to HTML5. They can do that and you can do Scratch on any system providing you can do it online.

The ST has already begun working on an HTML5 Scratch, but I don't really know the status of it. They've been working on it for a while, and I haven't heard of a date when they expect to have it done, so…

yea, I find building in minecraft is easier on X-box and it would probably be the same with drawing sprites (and also all X-box 360's have microphones so no-one will miss out on being able to record things)

Agreed. And, I'll have more control over things, as I'll have more buttons to press, unlike the PC where every key is the same.
