maintenance during school hours
We love SCRATCH! We have about 400 kids in our area enrolled in our after school code clubs in the greater Seattle area! When SCRATCH schedules maintenance for what they think of as Wednesday night (6pm EST)…that is actually right at 3pm Pacific Time…exactly during our club time...
This happened soo many times last Spring that we nearly had a rebelion. Off line version is not usually an option when using the school computers, so we are stuck playing “un plugged” type coding games…
Please remember your West Coast after school Scratchers when going down for maintenance! Thanks,

I think that scheduling maintenance during times when users are generally less active (ie school hours) would be a good idea. Support.

No support, as a lot of schools use Scratch during computer classes. Because there's computer class and after school clubs, and they both need time.

And then we get tons of complaints about how classes can't use online Scratch… XD I think that scheduling maintenance during times when users are generally less active (ie school hours) would be a good idea. Support.

I don't think that there's much we can do about the times, since there are always some people that use Scratch at any given time.

The thing about server downtime is that there's never a good time to have it. Even scheduling it in the middle of the night could break the flow of those doing the maintenance and of Scratchers around the world. Trying to mitigate this is a good idea, but I have no clue when would be the best time to mitigate issues…

Unfortunately, as some people have pointed out, you can't pick a time to do maintenance where no one will be active- there are still going to be active users, no matter what time of day you pick. However, I think that just picking a time when server activity is generally lower would still help. That way, as few users as possible will be affected.

3pm Pacific Time…exactly during our club time...Please remember that i and some other scratchers live in Indonesia. So if the server downtime is 03:00 AM there, we will have a downtime at around 03:00 PM. Some scratchers still online at that time. So i can't say either support or no. As said above, a website used all over the globe is likely to be active at any time of the day, so there's no good time to have the website down. However, the website could be down at different times, such as 6 PM one week and 6 AM the next week (not sure about the timezone, EST?). Then this issue would be partly solved as some people will be on the first week at that time but others will (likely) be on the second week when the website is down, meaning they both miss out on it once instead of one group missing it twice and the other not missing it at all. This means it's a bit fairer.

It would be nice to make server downtime to an appropriate time, but Scratch is used in lots of countries. Even if about half of Scratchers are from the US, there are still a lot in places like Australia, UK and some Asian countries, and moving downtime to 1AM in Boston, then it would be 1PM in Jakarta, Hong Kong and Perth and 3PM in places like Sydney, so there would have to be a way so downtimes could be the least disruptive.

I really wish it were to be down at one time, but well, Scratch is used everywhere! Like, there's downtime at 6pm here in america's east coast, and 3pm in the Pacific. It can't really be helped.

Yeah just forget about all the other countries (sarcasm, obviously)
There isn't a good time for downtime - people all over the world use this site. You'll just have to deal with it and find something else to do in your club.

Perhaps downtime could be on Sunday, when schools are closed and extracurricular programs are less likely to be using Scratch.

I'd say Saturday, if the down time was on Sunday, Scratch would be down on Monday in some parts of the world. Schools in those sections wouldn't like that. Perhaps downtime could be on Sunday, when schools are closed and extracurricular programs are less likely to be using Scratch.

This is a great compromise!

Support. But of course, the ST might be so tired at 6 AM.

Ouch, that's harsh. Scratch is a really good resource for starting to learn how to program; the website being worked on shouldn't mean that some people must regularly miss out on it! Yeah just forget about all the other countries (sarcasm, obviously)
