I haven't seen any spambots recently but support jvvg's idea.

unique system. Spambots are able to adapt to almost anything if someone has enough time to program them, but people generally only program tools to get around the common CAPTCHAs (like the old reCAPTCHA, math problem ones, and a few other common forum plugins). However, if your website uses something unique (it could be something as simple as recognizing shapes, as long as it's not something commonly used), then you have successfully defeated spambots. One I suggested earlier is that you do something like this:Yep. Support. As someone who has been fighting against spam for a long time, I am pretty experienced in what to do. The key is to have a<triangle>
Click the image that is the same shape as the image above:
<square> <circle> <upside-down triangle> <star>
That would be extremely easy, and doesn't even require any language proficiency. However, since I haven't seen it on any other websites, it would be extremely effective (the one I used to use on my website just involved clicking on one letter and had about a 1/5000 failure rate).

Like the common website test with 2 screwed up, in a circle, etc. gibberish words that you have to enter? Prohaps a system where there would be random “tests” where the person would have to complete (very simple, not very complicated, like “enter these numbers” or “Slide to verify”)

Don't make it a sliding puzzle though. They confuse me. Support. I also have another kind of puzzle.
You would have to match up a picture with the correct word.

theres always phone number verification, but to comply with COPPA it'd have to be a parent's phone number in the case of all the small children on this website.

That would not work out. Like you said, it would have to be a parents email.

Support this and jvvg's idea.
I think it was imageshack I just got an account for and when I did it gave me 9 pictures and told me to select all that contained pickup trucks. I thought it was genius.

Support for something like jvvg's idea, although it will do nothing to prevent human spammers.

Support, sounds good for me. That way there would be less spam accounts in the site

Support.
Codecademy has a quite weird one; select all the drinks, not the food.
Try something unique, like that.
(Also, what if the person in charge of the spambots does that Captcha or whatever, and then hooks up the spambot to that account?)
