Curators

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Curators~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Recently I haven't been too happy with the projects being picked by some curators (not going to say names).
I understand that the ST has been picking the curators for quite awhile now…
but perhaps scratchers could make the choice?
I do think if scratchers were to just flat-out vote for someone who applied that would be biased toward popular scratchers.
So perhaps people submit the projects they would like to have be curated… then people vote on the set, and whoever's set got the most votes gets to be curator?
I haven't completely thought this through, so have you any ideas?
So you mean projects are suggested, the ST picks some, and we vote on the ones that get featured? Support to that.
Well I meant that perhaps people submit a group of projects that they pick, and if those projects get voted the most, the person who submitted those projects gets to be curator. Your idea does sound good though!
Well, what is the point of curators if scratchers vote, and sometimes their choices don't even get in. The curators will just turn into a regular scratcher voting.
Yes but then a scratcher with say 1000 followers makes a project asking to be curator, it would have more attention than say someone with 10.
Support, but, what about alt accounts and duplicate votes?
This explains that you would be voting on a set and not a person so you don't know who put together the set of projects
The ST can fairly easily find out if you are using multiple accounts to do that, and they can probably give an alert for it.
No support. Then they (if by they you mean not ScratchTeam) would only vote on the good projects/not the ones that need advice or feedback.
Curation isn't about giving feedback. It's about giving attention to underviewed projects
that entirely depends on who has more power: the ST or the userbase.
I kind of think the same thing with featured projects. I mean, some of them are really cool, but no offense, others; I wonder how they get on the front page if they're the same thing, let's say, any scratcher would be able to make. Like the featured project from 2010(I mean, whoo! Talk about time lapse).
I like the idea!
However, I do see some logistical problems - many people want to be curators, so how would the typical scratcher go through all the curators and/or their submitted projects? Typically, people would tend to go to see the curator submissions of popular scratchers/projects made by popular scratchers, since they don't want to have to filter through all the “bad” curators.
Also, the scratch community tends to lean toward certain types of projects more than others, such as games, comedy/animations, ones made by popular scratchers, and simplistic ones, even though other types of projects may be just as good or better. So this may end up placing all votes on curators who submit certain types of projects, which eliminates variety. Additionally, people may use this tactic of submitting these types of projects as a method of easy fame or attention.
Lastly, the whole idea of having people vote on projects is similar to a top-loved section. You may argue that there would be more underviewed projects getting top-voted, but as I pointed out in my first paragraph, scratchers might not want to vote on an unpopular scratcher or one with unpopular submissions.
Nevertheless, I like the concept, and would definitely like to see it develop into something real.
Feel free to point out any logical flaws or suggestions to these potential problems.
Yeah, I see the flaws in what would be an otherwise really good idea. Maybe the ST could pick a few possible curators, which the community then has to vote on?
Another problem is if you are one of the curators to be voted on. If you see that the projects you suggested for curating are on the voting section or whatever, but don't become the curator, that means you'll know you could have become curator… if only a few (or a lot) more people voted for your projects… but instead they chose generic platformers and CCs and five second animations. That is most of what is on top loved, to be honest.
