A way to change your username without making any confusion.

The title says all:

Some scratchers want to change their usernames, but they can't. So why don't make usernames something like twitter?

HOW SHOULD IT WORK?

First we will have a username, like right now. And a nickname. For example:

Mundo Finky How to's - @mundofhowtos

So there won't be any confusion, because you can't change your username ( @mfhowtos ) , only your name ( Mundo Finky How to's )

There should be a limit of characters on the name so there won't be spam.

You could change your username once a week so it can't be spammed and the server will have space to manage all the names.

WHERE THE NICKNAME WOULD APPEAR AND WHERE THE USERNAME WOULD APPEAR?

In the front page, only <username> of the project creator.
In the profiles, “projects shared” by <nickname>
In the top of the profiles: @<username> - <nickname>
In the projects: by @<username> - <nickname>
In the favorited projects part of the profiles: by @<username>
In the following/followers bar: @<username>
In what's happening: <nickname> favorited this project:
9 minutes ago by @<username>
In the curator tab of the studios: @<username>
<nickname>

In all the comments: @<username> - <nickname>
In the forums posts: @<username> - <nickname>
In the messages: @<username> favorited your project
In the upper right when you are logged in: <nickname>
When you add people to the studios, on the bar of following/followers: @<username>

Support if the software architecture can handle it, but I'm not sure if it could.

Interesting idea… although I still think it could cause confusion… and impersonation troubles. Like, Twitter needs a checkmark next to all of the famous people because these people all get impersonated so much.

No support, just keep the name you're stuck with, you'll live.

It isn't worth reworking the architecture for.

Don't like your username? Create a new account. Simple.

The name can be used to another things, not to just change the username. I mean, “Awesome tutorials” “Great how to's” I think we could change the name so when people sees our name knows what's the theme of our projects!

Not useful. Impersonation is a bad, Bad, BAD thing.

No support. It isn't all that useful (your account has plenty of space to summarize what you do) and usernames are meant to be unique and static.

Aside from that, to implement it would require a rework of a major part of the software architecture for a rather minor change. Maybe support for Scratch 3.0, when the site it likely to be entirely re-done anyways, but as that is in the far distant future, I don't really find it relevant right now.

11. Changing your username
The software architecture isn't designed to handle it. It would also be very confusing to everybody if you did change your username.

This type of suggestion is forbidden.

So, if I understand what you are saying, it's not so much changing your username as giving yourself a second name (a nickname?). Interesting idea! Where would the name appear - and where would the nickname appear? Would the project have “by <username>” or “by <nickname>” Would the profile use the username or the nickname in the URL “scratch.mit.edu/users/<???>” I'm kind of thinking that it could still be pretty confusing.

Actually, a number of people kind of do this now. I'm often known as “P2C” or “Paddle” - but it's just done informally and not integrated into the site in any way

No support. There will be a HUGE breakout of confusion. Everyone will think you're a big fan of your account, or think you're trying to steal your account.

I support it if when the “nickname” shows up, it's in italics and when hovered over shows the real username.

In the top loved, top remixed, curated, etc. will appear the username. In the comments it will show up nickname & username, same on the projects.

I don't support. First, it's not that important. Changing usernames, while it may have social pros, will not help make your Scratch learning experience better or have peoples appreciate your more. Second, Scratch, the Scratch Website, and its server, already, already has its way, how it handles data, accounts, and peoples. Implementing changing usernames will not worth the time, the energy, and the annoying debugging experience. They may have to recode the whole registering system because their current data saving system doesn't support this, that, because it's not designed to do this, and that. Moving your projects and identity to a new account with a new username is like, far more easy, simple, and worth the effort.

I have a small computer with little RAM and space. I regularly deleted unused files, unimportant files, and unimportant apps. I sacrificed some of them. I deleted my browsing history every few months. I organized my data in my computers in a very strict way, deleting everything that's not really important. I did all these steps so that I could have and do more important stuff. So that I could get my Java Development Kit with not lag. So that I could learn using detailed, heavy PDFs. I deleted and sacrificed things, unimportant things, although I liked some of them, so that I could do more worthy things. Same with this. The Scratch Team should save their time on better things and avoid small features that could potentially give lots of frustration.

Just my seribu rupiah.
