I don't like how I have to manually check my notifications instead of having a little bar pop up.

An orange dot with a number showing how many (if you have any) new messages is supposed to pop up on the envelope.
But it doesn't, (which has already been reported.)

I like on the old Scratch it put a bar at the top if I got a new message, but now the new mail-shaped icon, I have to click on it a lot to just see if I have any new messages!

Maybe you should put a number next to it like on some OSX and iOS apps:

that's almost exactly what there is, although for some people it's not working (working fine for me though).

They are working again for me.

I actually prefer it without the blue bar. For ages it has really annoyed me
