How do you get them?

Any love, favorite, or view will earn the project creator 5 ScratchCoins.
Any Follow will earn the user that got followed 10 ScratchCoins.

How do they work?

You can use your ScratchCoins at the Scratch Boutique, where you can buy…

Skins for your profile page

Badges for your profile (more on ‘em later)

Stuff to customize your digital Scratch Cat avatar!

What are badges?

Badges are little thingys that go beside your profile info. They are just for show-off or sumthin’.

What is an avatar?

An avatar is your own litle Scratch Cat that you can customize (See ‘How do they work’ section).

Listen, It is a great idea, but the Scratch badges have been rejected as of here:

This would harm Scratch's purpose, and people would determine their social worth on the site based on achievements in games, and some users would act as if they are more important than others merely because they have more game badges.

Authough the ScratchCoins seem to be a good idea, they can cause some problems:

Boasting, like "Hey Everyone! I got 300000000000000000000000000000000 Scratch coins"
Lossing a follower, love, or favorite, meaning -5 coins? Or What? You can just click on your test account: Love, Unlove, Love, Unlove, Love, Unlove to get like 20 coins.

A.) It would turn scratch into a hierarchy, which is a terrible thing.

B.) it would spur EVEN more of the people begging for loves and favorites, something that already plagues the community.

C.) The scratch team has already denied this

D.) Scratch is about programming, not some social bullcrud.

It's just a bad idea overall.

Edit: oh, and also, if this were inplemented, would you be ready for the constant spam of:

Yep. We have no intention of ever adding currency, badges, etc. That's not the point of Scratch. Please read the stickies before posting.

Thanks for your suggestion - it's great that you are trying to improve Scratch

However, badges / coins have been considered in the past (as mentioned in this topic) but ultimately rejected as we don't feel it would be a good fit for our community.
