Animated thumbnails should turn static.

In the recent years people are getting addicted to animated thumbnails in projects that could lag the front page. My suggestion is to make every animated thumbnail static so they cannot animate so it helps reduce lag. Should only apply to project thumbnails. Agree?

GIF thumbnails are so rare that the tiny amount that there are wouldn't be enough to cause any lag at all, because you can only set them using a specific feature in a specific extension (not naming due to policy)

Animated thumbnails can lag on some lower end devices

Not in the very small amount that there actually are, there's usually only one or two on a page

That's actually one of the reasons why they currently get taken off of the front page, when found.

If I remember correctly, browser extensions are not required to use animated thumbnails.

Bump, they get very common.
I guess these should be banned ONLY for project and studio thumbnails. (to prevent lag, gifs imported would turn static)

Is it already not the case that gif thumbnails cannot get on the front page for this exact reason? They really cause minimal lag. I've seen someone suggest that there be the option for gifs to not play in settings, however, which I think is fine.

I just don't really think it's that necessary to get rid of them entirely.

“ITS LAGGY” Unless you're using scratch on the 2013 kids android tablet that has the entire Google play section of games installed it won't lag. If it chugs on GIF thumbnails it probably won't play the actual project. Even the extra-low end Chromebooks wouldn't lag when displaying these thumbnails (from experience)

Also I have not seen an animated thumbnail in a while so

But Scratch team still quickly removes them from fp, don't they?

Yeah, no. I'm on a Chromebook that's fairly representative of many used by Scratchers in schools- and this lags when there's a few ads on a webpage.

Just because you don't use a device that lags that much doesn't mean that others don't.

Bump, ban animated thumbnails to avoid lag. Do this, because when there are too many of them, I could get discouraged to stop using Scratch. Animated thumbnails should be banned.

Sure and let's make Gif PFP static also Studio Gif should be static Let's make this Studio thumbnail turn static it will definitely help scratch (this is being sarcastic I don't think anyone will like it being static)

-snip-

Animated Thumbnails do little to no lag If I recall and in the big 2025 every Computer, Tablet, or Phone can handle the 2% lag of these
-snip-
-snip-

-snip-

Also, Projects with animated thumbnails on the Explore page are rated NFE. The only way to get projects on the Explore page is if they are not rated NFE, so…

Most of your post here is outside what the suggestion is actually suggesting.

That aside:
Yes, it does cause lag to the front page, not your own devices.
Animated thumbnails are marked NFE manually.

The one way I can think of is to restrict the filetype of animated thumbnails (assuming that'd be doable? Not actually sure since it seems all thumbnails are converted to APNG)
