A signature is whatever you want it to be. (As long as it follows the CGS) It's also for whatever. You can advertise, show pictures, or make a kumquat guard!

It doesn't have a written purpose. (Not anymore anyways) it used to be there to differentiate people from others because there were no profile pictures. had citation but forgot where it was.

I mean, it's sort of just for fun (I personally just use it for LotR quotes, XD).
Some people put useful links in their signature, like links to Scratch Wiki pages. Other people put information about themselves, like pronouns and the like.
You can put whatever you want in your signature (as long as you follow the Community Guidelines!)
