Delete or edit your comments [SOLUTION]

6.1 Delete or edit your comments everywhere
The inability to delete your comments everywhere is put in place so users do not post inappropriate comments or spam comments on other users' profiles, projects, or studios, just to delete them later on. In contrast, you are not really likely to spam your own projects or profile. The only benefits to this are to remove comments that you did not mean to post and to fix spelling errors. The former could be solved by thinking carefully before posting any comments, and the latter could be worked around by typing slowly and/or stating your mistakes in a reply to the comment. This also applies to forum posts; that is, a feature for Scratchers to delete their own forum posts will not be implemented. This suggestion extends to the ability to delete your own comments even if nobody has seen them yet.

Editing comments could similarly lead to comment manipulation, such as a user commenting “I like this project,” waiting until someone replies with “I agree,” and then editing the original comment to say “I hate this project.” Allowing Scratch Team members to view the edit history of a comment does not make it easy to moderate, since then they have to look carefully at the context of each edit, which takes time.

Solution to Prevent Inappropriate Comment Deletion (Avoiding “Post and Delete” Abuse)
Problem Identified: Users can post and delete inappropriate or spam comments before moderators or others can report them.

Solution:
Introduce a soft delete feature, so that comments deleted by users are still visible to the Scratch Team for moderation.
When a user deletes a comment, it is replaced with a placeholder like “This comment was deleted by the user” for everyone except moderators.
Users can be permitted a limited number of deletions per day to stem rapid spam-posting and deletion.

However I do think soft deletion should only be available after a certain time has passed since the comment was posted, which should be a reasonable amount of time to report it if it was rule-breaking.

Solution to Avoid Comment Manipulation through Editing
Problem Identified: Users can edit comments to control conversations (e.g., changing “I like this project” to “I hate this project” after a positive response).

Solution:
Employ an edit history feature available only to the Scratch Team so that moderation is possible.
When a comment has been edited, there is a small “Edited” label beside it, which discourages tampering.
In order to avoid too much editing or fraudulent editing, users may have a time limit for editing (i.e., no later than 5-10 minutes from posting).
Or, allow limited changes only (e.g., fixing spelling errors) by restricting the ability to change more than 20% of the comment text.

With these safeguards in place, we can allow users to edit or delete their comments responsibly without allowing abuse. The moderation burden on the Scratch Team would not appreciably rise because:
Purged comments are still visible to members of Scratch Team.
Edit history is accessible to moderation but not to the public.
Editing and deletion limits avoid abuse.

The Scratch Team does not go around searching for inappropriate content, they usually find it through reports. This will not help the Scratch Team catch people who abuse the delete feature, because they require reports to find the inappropriate content, and they won't get any reports because people don't think the comment is inappropriate.

The rejection quote says that there are still problems with that.

Sadly, even with a view history for ST, it does NOT cut down on the moderation they have to do. And they still have to check dates and times

The time limit or minor changes can still lead to inappropriate things, or it's not enough to help a lot

that seams like the reason for bad moderation (they need more staff like griffpatch)

No, they need people to report things, which they don't do for whatever reason.

I think this should have the same cool down as commenting, right?

I'm fine with the soft deletion feature (accidents and regrets do happen), but as other people mentioned, allowing st to view edit history would not get editing comments unrejected.
However I do think soft deletion should only be available after a certain time has passed since the comment was posted, which should be a reasonable amount of time to report it if it was rule-breaking.

I agree. These two suggestions do not need to go hand-in-hand, and I have no issue with this deletion feature.

But what if the comment's disrespectful, and was then deleted by OP?

Can other people report that?

Does a deleted comment notify the Scratch Team?

If so, wouldn't that be cluttered by more mundane comments being deleted?

Well, if it was disrespectful and deleted by the user, then it isn't available to the public, so it technically can't be reported and the ST will just find it and… well… yeah.

I do see your point because no action will be taken against the account if someone sees something disrespectful and doesn't report it and the OP deletes it - in which since there is no report, no action.

Not sure if someone already pointed this out, but at least in the first one, the issue is not that people can delete comments, and then the ST can't see them. In fact, the ST can see any and all comments that are deleted.

The issue is that other users cannot see them, so it's impossible to report a comment if the user deletes it. I do think the idea of a system where you can request your own comment to be deleted would work in theory, but just puts more workload on the already overworked mod team that doesn't seem necessary.

On the second thing: Again, putting the edit history only open to the ST doesn't give a standard user a chance to see the inappropriate edit history - leading to no (or minimal) reports on things.
