I tried the installer, and I got mint overwritten, but the installer threw an error at my face
It looked like a python backtrace, I cannot recall the whole thing
It had “ostree deploy” in it

I'll try to install Debian on an old ThinkPad from the T series. If all goes well & it'll be somewhat usable, I'll be using that as my every-day computer.

So my mom's laptop has finally given up, however she's letting me install Linux on it to so that she can keep using it. However, of course, I'm having hang ups on the distro I should choose so I thought I'd ask y'all. Here are the requirements:
- HAS to be based on Ubuntu (or Debian), it's the distro she's most familiar with
- HAS to work out of the box
- HAS to work on a lower end computer, her laptop can't upgrade to windows 11 and she can't install the newest windows 10 update
- HAS to have touchscreen support, her track pad doesn't work anymore
- She says she doesn't care about the desktop environment but I think she'd be more comfortable with one that looks and feels like windows

Personally I would recommend Lubuntu, I use arch now but I had a decent experience with it a while back, good for low end stuff.

Perhaps Xubuntu? It comes with XFCE, which is a lightweight desktop environment I use for Debian. You can move the taskbar down & modify it to feel more like Windows XP/7.

For the DE you could chose GNOME and add extensions (I can mention specific ones if you like) to make it look like Windows (Don't forget to install GNOME Tweaks and add the minimize and maximize buttons ). For the distro, even though I am a Debian user, I won't recommend it because it's hard for beginners to approach. I would've recommended Linux Mint, but I won't because Cinnamon (or at least the old one on Debian) doesn't have (good) touchscreen support. Though I heard that they added touchscreen support. You can give Linux Mint a try and if it doesn't work try the XFCE version of Mint (I heard it has touchscreen support) or any other distro with GNOME + extensions.

My install of Arch has RedmondXP installed with Xfwm (which is a nice recreation of Windows XP windows, and also the one I use), so I'd definitely choose this.
(Not sure if it's bundled with Xubuntu, but if my limited research is right the “xfwm4-themes” package should have it)

Linux Mint Cinnamon meets all the requirements. Proper touchscreen support was added to Cinnamon last year and it works pretty smooth. Mint XFCE should be a backup option cause imo it's a little annoying to navigate. could just be me though
