Can scratch read USB controllers? (other than makey makey)
I feel like it would be cool to connect an arcade stick to scratch, so I want to know if that's even possible. Thanks!

you should use an extension to do this. can't say it without getting muted.

Use a program that converts gamepad input to keyboard input.

It's not that the extension would do anything (bad)- it's that per this policy they're not allowed to say it.What can't I say? What would the extension do? you should use an extension to do this. can't say it without getting muted.
Anyways, TurboWarp has this feature if you add the “Gamepad” extension, if you want to experiment with this.. There's also a suggestion to add something similar to Scratch, but it was closed due to there not really being anything else to add to it, and posts were getting more and more off-topic.
Scratch doesn't actually detect anything about the Makey Makey- the Makey Makey says to your computer “I'm an external keyboard”, it's just that it isn't. You can use the Makey Makey extension at any time, with or without a Makey Makey- it's just looking at what keys your browser is reporting were pressed, and since your browser (and operating system) are fooled into thinking the Makey Makey is an external keyboard, it reports keys pressed when the one of the Makey Makey's inputs is triggered in some way.
