this would only be one day a month for the scratch team to view reports and make edits to scratch it would also be fun if you can play games while in this mode users will be able to log in but won't be able to make studios and project but will be able to access any thing thats been posted before this time

you can still make games just cant post them

So lock everyone out of their accounts for a day, so that… what, exactly?

The ST may occasionally need some extra time to review reports, but they seem to be doing fine.

Most server maintenance that would require downtime would require actual downtime- as in Scratch is showing the maintenance screen- not just nobody being logged in for a day.

This could also potentially make a lot of teachers somewhat mad when they can't use Scratch in their classrooms for a day.

The way things work now, if the ST needs a break to take in reports they will put Scratch in maintenance manually, although it would be sort of nice if they did it more often… I think this might be a decent idea, but it may get some backlash from the community.

I would assume that you mean that
  • no new comments could be made or replied to
  • no new forum posts could be made or replied to
  • no WIWO or About me's may be edited
  • no profile pictures can be replaced
  • no projects or studios may be shared or created
  • existing projects cannot be unshared and studios cannot be deleted (so people wont unshare their projects to avoid moderation)
but
  • people can still log in and out
  • hearts still work
  • loves still work
  • projects can still be created, but not shared
  • reports can still be sent
  • the multi-report system still takes effect
If so, then this makes sense and I could see it working.

If reports can still be sent, then what is the point? The main purpose of this suggestion seems to be that this would be a day to allow the Scratch Team to catch up on reports. If reports can still be sent on this day, then the Scratch Team wouldn't really be able to do any catching up at all.

I do see the issue in not allowing reports to be sent, though — if the website is still public, then people could find inappropriate content anyway, and it would be nice if that were reported as soon as possible. So we have a bit of a problem here in terms of the suggestion.

The idea of this is to make it so they have a day where no new innapropriate content can appear but things can still be reported and they can catch up with the existing bad things and clear them out - new reports coming would still increase workload but since no new innapropriate things would be coming the net-decrease in unanswered reports would be stronger and allow the ST to catch up.

Maybe it could be named “clean-up day” and be announced when it is going to happen to prevent confusion

but 1. they shouldn't be, 2. there would be an announcement in advance and 3. they could wait for the next day

The scratch team is having literally no issues with reports right now. I haven't seen a single inappropriate project, comment, studio or forum. Tbh, you can only find it if you try.

Scratch team has stated multiple times that they are understaffed, and innapropriate things still get on the front page sometimes (it happened just a few days ago!) If we have a day of downtime every once in a while then they will have time to get things done.

(Although it would help if people actually reported inappropriate things, and people knew what's not appropriate)
They really need to make an announcement, reminding people of the various announcements that have been rules updates and linking to them

Ah, I see. Still, I don't see this helping too much from the moderator point of view. Sure, they may be able to catch up a little bit on reports, but I don't really see it making much of a dent, especially again considering that stuff can still be reported on this day.

If anything, I worry that such a public announcement would increase the number of reports sent on that day… "Tomorrow's the clean-up day, so I'll save all my reports for tomorrow, because surely the Scratch Team will definitely handle my reports on their clean-up day!"

Teachers can use offline Scratch for this purpose

no support, there are tutors who make scratch tutorials and they will be disrupted if this happens
