An AI assistant for Scratch?
I thought that this was added to TOLORS already, and good grief, this is like the trillionth time this was suggested.
My mistake. I read TOLORS and it looks like generative Ai is the only one.
I think that it's too early to use Ai, and it's not only inappropriate, but manipulative, and it's not really that good to use if you're wanting to use it to generate images of something (sure it looks cool to some, but it results in subjective opinion to some, they might not like it).
I really think that even though an Ai assistant would help teach kids, it would just ruin the learning aspect so much for some.

An AI assistant for Scratch?
Yes. AI is a really helpful tool, and it is the future. I was thinking maybe you could use an AI for Scratch similar to GitHub's Copilot. Since I use GitHub almost every day, the AI has definitely been helpful. Maybe we could use the same thing for Scratch. You can talk to it using only a safe chat, giving you prompts like “How do I program a ____ game?” where the blank can be filled with something of the user's choice. It will only be enabled when someone has the Scratcher status (like cloud variables).
Some limitations include:
- Scratch is used by people as young as 8, they may not understand it
- People could utilize it in such a way that they could have the AI building projects for them (not the art)
Thoughts?
That's a great idea. I use AI almost every day, for music, pictures, or just for fun. But I never thought about using it in Scratch.
But knowing Scratch, I doubt that they will add this. Because of server resources, if they did have enough space for AI, they would've added letters and symbols in cloud variables. But in the future, when the Scratch team have more space for data in the server, it might happen.
Until then, we're stuck with making fake AIs in scratch.

An AI assistant for Scratch?
There are multiple reasons this shouldn't be added
1. Too costly for a non-profit. AI will cost hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars to maintain for a year.
2. Takes the learning out of Scratch. Most kids would now start using AI instead of working on the scripts instead, and learning.
3.Would nullify a forum. The Help With Scripts forum would not be needed at all.
4. May give out inaccurate answers: AI may give out answers that aren't correct, and lead to even more confusing.
5. Inappropriate content: What if someone asks AI to generate ideas, and something inappropriate comes up? And vice versa, how will the AI avoid generating inappropriate content?

I think a ai the could find bugs and correct them but not write entire games would be good. However this would probaly cost alot and not be worth it.

An AI assistant for Scratch?
Mockup for contact us page:
This is interesting to me, because there are many AI things nowadays. But, I am not fond of AI.
Apple was going to try this and Siri got really personal. And like another person in this thread said, there are people as young as 7 on this website. They could put in random numbers and letters!!
Now even though it wouldn't be good for things like this, It could help scratchers with code they don't know about. For example, if somebody is trying to make a platformer and they want a boss battle in it. The AI could give a step by step guid on how to do it or how to do the main issues they have with the battle.
AI for Scratch could be good if it's used correctly.

No support. If a post about an AI image generator built into Scratch is enough to turn certain people into mindless rage zombies, then I do not want to imagine how many people would be mad over this one.

Make sure its dataset does not include anything inappropriate. Then, it won't even 5. Inappropriate content: What if someone asks AI to generate ideas, and something inappropriate comes up? And vice versa, how will the AI avoid generating inappropriate content?know inappropriate things exist let alone generate content with them.

I found this on a university website, which probably hasn't been a recent article, and could've been made several decades ago.Judging by the UI this is pretty old, when ChatGPT was first released. I just tried with GPT4o mini and got this:

Also, young people may not understand the concept of this and might get confused.
is this part a joke?
ai is everywhere and you say young people who (most likely) have seen ai do ai things might get confused?
hot take ig
anyways, support. its not ai coding or ai art in scratch, its an ai assistant to help you. so you still would have to make it yourself!

Even though I am against generative Ai, I think an Ai assistant does work, but it's not always accurate, like when you're wanting to write a 500 paragraph essay. ai is everywhere and you say young people who (most likely) have seen ai do ai things might get confused?
anyways, support. its not ai coding or ai art in scratch, its an ai assistant to help you. so you still would have to make it yourself!
For example, let's say that your teacher wanted you to write an essay about what interests you, but you're unsure on how to write it in your own words. Well, Ai could help you in a good way by suggesting you to fix grammar issues, correcting spelling, making sentences sound more realistic and formal, etc. If someone, let's just say they wanted to cut corners for some parts and use Ai to cheat on that assignment that they were given, then it wouldn't be as accurate or realistic to the teacher, resulting in a failing grade.
Does the Scratch Team really want to invest in Ai just so users can tell it to do things for them? My short answer is: No. Unless it's going to be useful in fixing errors, or bugs, they might as well just not use it.

ChatGPT: “The 23rd letter of hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia is ”p.“
True story. I just didn't screenshot it. It also claimed the same letter was ”b" on another occasion.

But… it is? The 23rd letter is definitely p. Me: “What is the 23rd letter of hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia?”
ChatGPT: “The 23rd letter of hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia is ”p."
This I have no defense for, however. It also claimed the same letter was “b” on another occasion.
