remove tinypic.com from the forum image host whitelist because it's not an image host anymore and it causes the sign-out bug

11/08/2024 Update: Recently, many Scratchers, me included, have reported an issue with the forums where users have been logged out of Scratch, and Tinypic seems to be the culprit. Since Tinypic's continued inclusion on the forum whitelist has seemingly gone from being just a bit unnecessary to actually breaking parts of the site, there's further incentive for Tinypic to be removed from the image whitelist.

in 2019, an image host known as tinypic, which was commonly used by many forumers during the early 2010s, shut down, deleting every image previously hosted there (which is why so many old forum posts just have broken image links now).

the scratch team never removed the website from the whitelist, which was actually somewhat reasonable, because when it was shut down, all tinypic-hosted images were replaced with a discontinuation message. if tinypic had been removed from the whitelist as soon as it shut down, that might have confused some forumers who didn't know why their photos were gone. but that logic only makes sense for about a year at most, and it would have been fine if it was removed from the whitelist after that brief period of potential confusion.

in 2023, the tinypic website was relaunched, not as an image host, but as a photography blog. because of the relaunch, the discontinuation message was deleted from the website, leaving many forum topics with broken image links.

and still, after all these years, the scratch team has not removed this website from the image host whitelist.

to prove that it's still on the whitelist, the below photos are hosted on tinypic.com, all of which load fine. they were uploaded by the current website's owners. click the “quote” button and scan through the [img] tags if you don't believe me.

i really don't see any good reason why this website is still on the image host whitelist. i mean, tinypic doesn't even provide the same services as it used to anymore, and the only reason why it could hypothetically be on the image whitelist stopped being a possibility in 2023. i propose that the website be removed from the whitelist, because there's the possibility the website's content could potentially change in the future to something inappropriate for scratch. while the website's content is fine right now, that may not be the case further down the road.

I'm confused. Did you upload a picture in the OP using tinypic.com as an image host? If so, why does it need to be removed, exactly?

it's an image hosted by the website itself, although users cannot host anymore.

depending that site contents can change overtime to display images that aren't appropriate for Scratch and how that tinypic is no longer an image host site, removing it from the whitelist seems reasonable.

Hopefully this will only result in broken links and not linking to unrelated images

I fully support - there is no reason to have it if it doesn't do anything

it already does - look at any forum post that used tinypic back when it was an image sharing site, and you'll find nothing left other than a broken image icon.

I came to find out that my main's signature screwed up some replies in topics here. I don't use tinypic, I can confirm since I use cube upload, and I never used the service, so that can't be the problem. It might be a png. file, probably?

Highlighting the issue presented though, I do agree and think that tinypic is no longer in service now due to losing a lot of profit and unable to keep the servers running on its last legs. It should be removed.

Edit: very nice and well organized topic btw. I love it.

Yeah, it's no longer useful as an image hosting website, and doesn't even show the image saying that it's down.

It's also now owned by Photobucket, although Photobucket doesn't use it to actually host any of the images it hosts.

The image is from timypic.com, yes, and is also hosted on tinypic.com (which is why it's showing up). However, the original poster didn't use tinypic's (now nonexistent) image hosting service to do so- that is just some random image from timypic.com that, because it is hosted at tinypic, is shown here on the forums.
