AN OPTION to be notified when mentioned in comments
So, I was reading TOLORS (The official list of rejected suggestions) and I came across this:

6.3 Notification for being mentioned in commentsI understand why this is rejected, but what if there was an option to turn this on? Maybe if you clicked to turn it on an alert would pop up saying “Warning: you could get spammed for this if someone says your name a bunch of times” or something like that. Here's a mockup made by @roofogato:
Some users would like to be notified whenever someone mentions their username in a comment on the website. Although such an option was considered, it was not added due to the potential for spam. For instance, someone could write @Scratcher multiple times to spam that user's notifications.

Alright while it can work… what about the more popular scratchers? And this can cause harassment spams too- like seriously. We don't wanna be notified 24/7 over random convos

How should they be notified? Is it just if they use @, or also just if they say the username? Or can it be either way, depending on what they toggle? Regardless of the system it uses, I think it could work.
The main reason I like this idea is that it will make gossiping a lot more difficult. I don't see much of a need for this suggestion otherwise. Is this the reasoning behind why you would like an option to be notified in comments?

and why would you like to gossip about users behind their backs? How should they be notified? Is it just if they use @, or also just if they say the username? Or can it be either way, depending on what they toggle? Regardless of the system it uses, I think it could work.

It would still be pretty easy to talk about somebody without using an @username, which wouldn't ping the person that is being gossiped. Some people just think gossip is a perfectly friendly and normal thing to do, I guess. and why would you like to gossip about users behind their backs?

the same way saying @KingRat_1 on the main site automatically links me, but just have it notify me too

Maybe one reasonable exception could be if your good Scratch friends were planning a fun surprise for you, in which case naturally they might talk about you without your knowledge to set up the fun surprise. But I guess in that case someone could write “starlightsparker” as opposed to “@starlightsparker” to avoid notifying you. .. its not tho. i always say, “i have the right to hear every conversation my name is mentioned in”

I could give you a lot of reasons, which would all break the Community Guidelines. and why would you like to gossip about users behind their backs?
That's why I asked if it will only work with a ping. It would still be pretty easy to talk about somebody without using an @username, which wouldn't ping the person that is being gossiped.

Probably, so that if it was added on short notice Griffpatch wouldn't be spammed right when it was added. would it be disabled on default?

Pretty sure it will, considering the suggestion is trying to find a solution for the rejected suggestion that, as far as I know, only involves the @ symbol. That's why I asked if it will only work with a ping.

I believe Sliverus's trying to explain that he supports the suggestion BECAUSE it would make gossiping harder, not because he wants to gossip. okay so if your aware the gossiping is not allowed why are you publicly annoucning your shame
It's not a good thing, but people still do it. That's why people are talking about gossip-this suggest would make it harder to do. .. its not tho. i always say, “i have the right to hear every conversation my name is mentioned in”
