On the front page, there should be a section called “Most recently joined scratchers” or something like that and it would have new scratchers in it. (joined the same day?) and then that would give you a chance to welcome them to scratch!
EDIT: System that randomly picks a handful of users? (thanks OmnipotentPotato)
EDIT: Okay to clarify some things: There could be a filter on inappropriate usernames. Next, this isn't just “check out the cool new scratchers with cool projects” I know most of them won't have any projects, or they will have very basic ones. The point is to welcome them to scratch, no matter coding or graphics skill level. I remembered when I joined (on another account) that my first few projects were really bad CCEs. A scratcher still kindly welcomed me to the community. If it were changed to “Newly became scratchers”, keep in mind that some don't become scratchers for months. I know some scratchers (thanks for your opinion on that Scratchifier) don't even looks at things like SDS, Recently shared, so it won't really affect you. As for student accounts, it will be RANDOM, so there's no guarantee that most of the accounts showcased will be student accounts. I hope you like this more detailed version of my suggestion.

The one issue is that I think people join the site so quickly that nobody would be there for more than a few minutes.

hm… Maybe scratch could pick out a few random people to be on the front page for the day, but then not everyone would get on. The one issue is that I think people join the site so quickly that nobody would be there for more than a few minutes.

support, but with one change:
1. it shows the 10 random recent new scratchers within last 24 hours.

Intended slow updating? The one issue is that I think people join the site so quickly that nobody would be there for more than a few minutes.

No support- none of them would have any projects- they would probably just be empty

No support, as per ^^^ No support- none of them would have any projects- they would probably just be empty
However, I think that the idea would be better if it was a “Recently Became Scratchers” section because then they would have at least two projects and they would be moderately active.

How about a system that picks 5-10 random users that joined in the last 24 hours. The users would be different ever time you reload though.
That's the best way to get the most users shown probably.

Let's use:
BUT 10-20 instead of 5-10. How about a system that picks 5-10 random users that joined in the last 24 hours. The users would be different ever time you reload though.

Well, okay. What about spambots, though? I saw a spambot with a username that was very inappropriate for Scratch. I'm not even going to say it here.Let's use:How about a system that picks 5-10 random users that joined in the last 24 hours. The users would be different ever time you reload though.

No support. There might be inappropriate user names, like the Recently Shared section.

Agreed. Once again, I think it should be recently became Scratchers. That would be more moderated. No support. There might be inappropriate user names, like the Recently Shared section.
