Its not that hard to convert webp images to pngs if your on a chromebook just remame the file from “Balling.webp to Balling.png”
Renaming to convert to another file format can cause for image data to be corrupted and unusable.

Manually renaming the file extension from .webP to .PNG has no affect on its data most of the time.

That's a warning on Windows, worded poorly. The file will stay the same. It's just that, if you use that file in a program that doesn't detect file types, then it won't be able to open that file.

Also, I believe on Chromebooks, it actually converts the file.

TIL chromebooks do that.

Support, the conversion will probably cost like nothing on the backend, and also like why not images are now becoming webp

Hasn't this already been somewhat implemented? The OP was made 2 years ago and it seems it's now possible to upload pfps and thumbnails as .webp files, though results may vary.

That aside: in my opinion, it depends on why people think it would be a good idea to support .webp images. If it's just so that Scratch is diversifying its supported file formats, I can see the logic in that, though both @Yoshiii999 and @rockerstage02 make a good point:

i support this idea because i hate webp. why did google make a new image format and not even bother to make it compatible with their own services?

Google mainly made this format for images on websites and not for the general population to use.
It has a stellar compression ratio and it supports both lossy and lossless compression. It also supports animation.
However, it’s mainly only supported by web browsers.

On the other hand, .webp isn't exactly that useful as a file format. As others have said it's easy enough to convert a .webp file to one that is compatible with Scratch, and it's not really that difficult to check what format an image is in before downloading it for use on Scratch. I also personally am not in favour of adding support for another animated image format.

So overall, although it's a nice idea, in my opinion it's not really necessary and could lead to unforeseen problems.
where are you getting thumbnails?

Support, I'd like to put in .webp pictures on Scratch without having to convert them to .jp[e]g or .png.

Semi support, scratch not supporting webp and all google images being webp encourages kids to make their own art and not steal art and get into potential legal issues. But most images being webp also just makes it harder than it needs to be

Nope, try uploading a webp file for yourself. It could be supported already, but the file picker menu doesn't accept those files for upload

Eventually they will, how do you think the clear pfp trick works?

Google doesn't even support WebP on half their products, and they made it! Support, more WebP support anywhere would be useful, including Scratch.

I don't think we are talking about the same thing I meant to say that the editor doesn't support uploading WebP files, not profile pages
