TAGS MUST GO!
We need a way to cut down spam!
THERE IS A SOLUTION:Narwhals! Categories!
So, what categories would be, it would be a seperate tab.
The categories would be like deviantart.
For example, the categories would be:
Art
-Traditional
-Music
-Dump
-Digital
-Music
-Dump
Animation
-WIP
-Humor
-“Say”
-Voiced
-Points
-Say
-Voiced
-Trailers
-Games
-Animations
Etc. Etc. Etc.
SO!

Disagree.
I always hate submitting my art to dA because I find the categories too limiting. I can never seem to find the right one.
I prefer the idea to have tags, author generated, maybe spellchecked by the system.

Categories seem to destroy one of Scratch's biggest beliefs: it gives the sense that scratch is only made for those things, rather than opening it up for anyone to create anything using their imagination. I know anyone could just not categorize their project which doesn't fit any of those categories, but in my view the entire website and program should support the big ideas and beliefs.
Additionally, it would seem to make projects more generic, rather than being each Scratcher's very own creation. A controlled tags section with flag buttons, a limit to 15 and a note above them in small print asking for clean, simple and not spam tags would be good.

This topic was many years ago, it was in 2012. I don't think it is relevant anymore, even if it was it would be best to create a new topic. Please check the date on a topic before posting. First of All, What does Category Mean

Since this has been bumped, I'll explain what happened here.
In Scratch 1.4, projects could have unlimited tags. This led to a problem with spam tags like the infamous “waffles”, which the ST fixed in 2.0 by limiting projects to 3 tags*.
However I've always suspected that the problem wasn't the lack of a tag limit, but the fact that anyone could tag any project and tags could be upvoted. That means that every remotely popular project had tag spam even if the creator wasn't a spammer, and also some people posted tags just to try and get them upvoted. There were also a few projects that existed just to get people to tag them as much as possible.
I think a better fix would have just been to only allow the creator to tag projects. A tag limit might not even be necessary after that, but even so it shouldn't have been as low as 3. 10 tags seems about right, here's a topic for increasing the limit.
* Projects from 1.4 actually still have all their tags, but you can only see the first 3 of them.

Well, I'd prefer that they bring back the limitations that tags had instead of limiting users, so semi-support.

They prob should only allow you to pick 1-2 explore ones, and then allow you to pick custom ones (though with a total limit, I believe someone suggested something similar before).

this would definitely be a bit more helpful then tags since it wouldn't let you spam things like
as I presume this feature would replace tags, there is an obvious downside of people adding their project to unrelated categories, so I semi-support this feature to be added.
#why #don't #you #favourite #and #love #this #project?

You can already do that with tags though, and it's not allowed anyway. this would definitely be a bit more helpful then tags since it wouldn't let you spam things like#why #don't #you #favourite #and #love #this #project?

You probably should only be able to select a certain amount of categories.

Also worth noting that you forgot to bump this topic before you posted this, and while doing that, you added nothing to the discussion, therefore, you just necroposted.
