Why? Because it's more ergonomic.

The area the user needs to focus on is in a red border, and in the second image (stage on the left), the panes are more closely packed together, which means less eye movement, which is good.

Well, this sounds obviously like it was made back when 3.0 was new or in beta or something based on how it's being phrased.

They stated in the topic that the suggestion was “Can we have a choice of where the stage is?”, and that's why it's an option.
