I once attempted to make an Operating System from 100% Scratch. It failed, whatsoever. Now, I am going to try and learn C through the weekends. Any recommended tutorials/books on doing that?

KDE Plasma looks better than Pantheon honestly.

Modern OSes are a huge mistake. Computers are a platform to amplify the human mind - you should be able to solve problems by translating your thoughts into high-level code. Unfortunately, corporations have taken the initiative to create modern ‘applications’, services provided by corporate leaders to solve specific problems for you entirely on their terms. They can write code that spies on you, collects data from you to sell, or even changes the way you think to benefit them (think advertisements and social media), and most people are totally none-the-wiser or even utterly complacent due to ‘convenience’!

If we don't have a way for everyone to code their own solutions (perhaps with the help of other people's homegrown solutions), then we put our livelihoods in the hands of Microsoft and Google. Not good! I think the ideal computing world is more like the artisanal crafts and simple mechanisms of pre-industrial times; you build your own software from locally sourced components or enlist the help of a trustworthy developer within your village.

Given that, what would the best OS be? Well, the closest I've seen so far is Smalltalk; a family of programming languages that operate in their own ‘worlds’, complete with a desktop environment. Older versions could run almost natively, so with a lot of tweaks it's a good candidate for a non-hostile OS.

Same thing could be said with any tech things really.
Big corps will always try to find profit in some way even though it means spying and controlling their users to do what they want, as if they chipped their consumers to mind control them as their slaves. /ref Because… that's how capitalism works.
Just look at the modern web. Articles cluttered with ads, pleas for money, and any disruptions that disturb you to get the information you want. Tim Berners-Lee would absolutely hate the web we had now.[citation needed]

Eh, I'm not sold. For me Smalltalk is more of a graphical shell than an OS, since it runs on a VM built for Smalltalk itself. Calling Smalltalk an OS is like calling Java an OS.

Personally, Fedora was my first distribution and it was great. But now I would recommend Mint as it's close to Windows, so its UI and installation process should be friendly to you.
