The only thing I can't comprehend is the fact so many people don't care about dying children, let alone feel disgusted about the joke.

Is it distasteful? Yes. Should he be federally punished? No. If we have freedom of speech he must not go to prison.

Edit: oh snap. Did not see this.
Big deal? 18 20 U.S. children died! Those children had bright futures and loving families! Who are you to be anti-sympathetic?! I'm sure you would feel the same way if your sibling was one of them.
Who are you to be anti-sympathetic to the thousands of people killed in the Middle East? Are you saying an American life is fundamentally more deserving of sympathy than a Syrian one? It is the government's job to keep Americans safe, but it is not our job as citizens to ignore the pains of our fellow human beings, no matter where they reside. The fact that they were “U.S. children” is not relevant.
His entire point was that yes, this is a problem, but we should still acknowledge that the problem is far worse elsewhere.

You live in the state where the Newton shooting happened. Big deal. In some Middle Eastern and African countries, shootings like that happen every day. There are billions of people who feel it a lot more than you.

The guy who was arrested also had a future and a loving family…

And thousands of people die every day. You can't prevent every single death.

Also, read the second paragraph of the Sandy Hook page. It was only the second deadliest at a school. The deadliest happened in my state.

Why does it seem that I am the only person extremely offended by this?
You shouldn't be offended. Living in Connecticut doesn't mean you should be more offended than anybody else. It's rare for school shootings and he didn't own any firearms. He also responded with lol and jk. It was obviously sarcasm.
Um, yes, he should be offended. I may live several hundred miles from where the shooting occurred, but I felt just as sad about the loss of innocent children as the parents of those kids. And to have someone joke about the death of children is just… incomprehensibly wrong. So much for sarcasm.
The fact that its “children” does not make it oh-so-more-tragic.

There are places where this happens a lot. These places are not in the US, but should we only have to care for the welfare of our country?

School shootings, bombings, terrorist attacks, etc. are extremely common. Whenever I see something like that on the news, I say “Oh, that's too bad”, but don't think much more of it because I know that it's so darn common.

And it was clearly a freaking joke. Dude, I'll admit, even I joke about death and shootings sometimes with my friends, and there's really no harm in that. Does making a sarcastic comment about tragic events immediately make one a terrible person? No, it doesn't! It's a bad thing to say, but it doesn't make the person themselves bad.

Personally, I think Maxdoss is the one who's right here. LeDerpy, I know where you're coming from, but you shouldn't have to feel more offended than everyone else, because we all know that Connecticut isn't the only place this stuff happens.

And also, calling him “anti-sympathetic” is a really jerky thing to say.

No, you're wrong. We do care. It's just that we don't think that a person should go to jail for 8 years because of a joke.

There are two kinds of people in this world: those who take everything seriously, and those who could care less.

P.S. SOMEBODY CLOSE THIS TOPIC BEFORE IT GETS OUTTA HAND.
no, and i'm offended by that statement. i care about all those lost lives, but i don't appreciate you getting on your high horse and acting better than him without even attempting to discuss/refute his point.

No, we're not closing this topic. This is a very interesting topic to discuss, even if it turns into an argument.

Stop trying to take down every topic that differs from your own opinion.

He made a joke. Big deal! If a teen deserves to go to jail for eight years just for sarcasm, then why the heck don't we all go to jail. I know a ton of people who make jokes about gun violence and stuff like that, so why does this kid have to be singled out? He doesn't! In fact, nobody should deserve this kind of punishment. It's barbaric, it's cruel, and it's just freaking IDIOTIC.

Ok, look guys, I may have not talked about this from the beginning (I saw the post), but…
THAT WOMAN?
WOMAN?!

And if she was able to track him down, either some adult woman or some lousy blonde teen (srry, but seriously, I mean a BARBIE GIRL).

AND WHAT KIND OF ADULT CALIFORNIAN MOM PLAYS LEAGUE OF LEGENDS?! SERIOUSLY?!
I mean, how was she EVEN ABLE to track him down? That are the questions that should be asked, too.
I don't know about you guys, but it could be A REALLY SMALL possibility that she tracked down his account, hacked the access to his IP and checked the address. Isn't that kind of illegal, too?

EDIT : Look I live outside of USA but I think this is SERIOUSLY ridiculous.
EDIT 2 : I tried playing LoL, not my RPG style, just no

Then I must be a hidden third kind that you don't know about along with a bunch of other people.

Anne Frankly, I believe that you're the one that's making it out of hand. (Did you see what I did there? With all the children killed during the Holocaust vs Sandy Hook?)

It was a canadian woman. Not confirmed to be a mom. It was on facebook too, so she could have looked at his page.

I think that's a little extreme (the reaction)…he obviously was kidding (hence the “jk”), and even though it's not something to joke about, I find it irrational that he's being sent to jail for this….

Well yes, I do agree that 8 years is too much of a punishment for someone of that age.
And I agree that we all feel sympathetic, but don't necessarily show it.
But here's where the flaws are:
People who take things seriously feel uncomfortable with jokes that are, in a sense, offensive.
People who joke about sensitive topics don't feel it would harm anyone because words don't really mean anything.

Everyone reads YOLO either as "do all the fun,“ or ”be careful in life." I partake the latter.

And before anyone asks: yes, I do live under a rock (as in I don't have friends). Stone me to death.

And it's a matter of perspective:
Is there a limit to how much a person can care, or is there no limit?
Could care less: There's always a lower state of care.
Couldn't care less: At the bare minimum of care.
