I have some knowledge of Squeak, so decided to slightly modify Scratch 1.4 for convenience (in particular, by following the instructions on this page.
After I had finished, I shift-clicked R and clicked Save Image For End-User, confirmed, but then it says “Changes have not been saved. Is it OK to cancel these changes?”, with the options Yes and No. Either way, Scratch closes and the next time I open Scratch, the code has reverted and it does not do what I want it to.
I know the problem is going to be blatantly obvious, I'm an idiot, etc., so please feel free to treat me like one.

Any help or pointer in the right direction will be greatly appreciated.

Download the Scratch Source Code and then when you're done go to File>Save in fill screen or something like that.

After you type/paste the code you have to press Alt+S (Command+S on Mac) to save changes.
